Amcor has launched Lift-Off—Rigids, an international corporate venturing challenge for start-ups developing commercial-ready technologies for circular, smart and high-performance rigid packaging.
Amcor has opened a new international pipeline for high-growth start-ups focused on transforming rigid packaging and adjacent consumer packaging systems. Through its latest corporate venturing initiative, Amcor Lift-Off—Rigids, the company is inviting emerging businesses to present technologies that are commercially advanced enough to move beyond experimentation and into scalable industrial deployment.
The challenge is being coordinated by Amcor’s Corporate Venturing & Open Innovation team and is designed to connect agile technology developers with one of the world’s largest packaging manufacturers. For start-ups, the programme offers access to industrial expertise, potential corporate venture funding, pilot opportunities and a route into global food, beverage and personal care supply chains.
The initiative reflects a wider shift in packaging innovation. Large manufacturers increasingly need external technology partners to accelerate progress in circularity, smart packaging, materials science and digital production. At the same time, start-ups often need manufacturing scale, regulatory knowledge and market access to convert promising technologies into commercial packaging solutions.
Corporate venturing is becoming an important bridge between early-stage packaging innovation and the high-volume manufacturing reality required by global brands.
Amcor is not seeking concepts at the laboratory stage. Applicants must show that their technologies have already demonstrated viability beyond early pilot testing and that they have a clear path toward long-term commercial value. This requirement is important because rigid packaging applications demand high levels of reliability, safety, performance and cost discipline before they can be adopted by major consumer goods companies.
The programme focuses on solutions that can improve packaging performance, enable circularity, enhance the consumer experience or create new business models. These objectives align closely with current market pressures, where rigid containers must deliver convenience and product protection while also responding to stricter sustainability expectations.
The scope of the Amcor Lift-Off—Rigids challenge covers ten technology priorities. These include shelf-life indicators, injection moulding processes and platforms, recyclable barrier technologies, fibre-based packaging, dispenser and applicator systems, retort and pasteurisation solutions, smart packaging, rigid and flexible hybrid formats, recycling and sorting technologies, decontamination systems, and artificial intelligence or machine learning applications.
Each of these areas addresses a different challenge in the future of rigid packaging. Shelf-life indicators, for example, could help reduce food waste by giving consumers clearer information about product condition. Recyclable barriers could improve circularity for containers that need protection against oxygen, moisture or contamination. Fibre-based formats may offer alternatives in categories where brands are seeking lower-plastic solutions.
Smart packaging and AI-driven systems also point toward a more data-rich packaging economy. Connected packs, improved sorting signals and machine learning tools could support better consumer engagement, more accurate recycling, improved quality control and more efficient manufacturing decisions. For rigid packaging producers, these technologies may become increasingly important as brands demand both sustainability and digital functionality.
The challenge follows a structured and rapid selection timeline. International submissions remain open until 8 June 2026, followed by internal review and feedback through 20 June 2026. Short-listed start-ups will then present their solutions during a Virtual Pitch Day scheduled for 30 June 2026, where founders will have the opportunity to engage directly with Amcor leadership.
Successful participants may move toward commercial partnerships, corporate venture investment and high-volume pilot projects. This combination of funding, industrial testing and customer access is particularly valuable in packaging, where scale-up can be difficult without the support of established manufacturing infrastructure.
The new rigid packaging challenge builds on previous Amcor Lift-Off programmes that have supported partnerships in advanced materials and recycling infrastructure. By extending the model to rigid containers and related technologies, Amcor is signalling that innovation in bottles, tubs, closures, dispensing systems and reuse models remains a strategic priority.
For the wider packaging sector, the initiative shows how circular design and advanced functionality are converging. The next generation of rigid packaging will not be defined by material alone, but by the integration of recyclability, performance, digital intelligence, consumer convenience and scalable manufacturing. Programmes such as Amcor Lift-Off—Rigids could help identify the start-ups capable of turning those ambitions into market-ready solutions.
