North Dakota professor Lokesh Karthik Narayanan creates sustainable e-commerce packaging using local byproducts, supporting rural communities and environmental health.

Innovative E-Commerce Packaging Solution Supports Rural Development

Lokesh Karthik Narayanan, an assistant professor at North Dakota State University, has developed an innovative solution for sustainable e-commerce packaging. His approach not only aims to address environmental concerns but also seeks to foster economic development within rural and tribal communities in North Dakota.

The idea for this sustainable packaging alternative emerged during Amazon Prime Day two years ago. Narayanan found himself surrounded by discarded bubble-lined plastic bags and cardboard boxes in his garage. This sight triggered a thought: "Why not use something natural?"

Inspired by his passion for gardening, Narayanan envisioned a packaging solution that could double as a gardening aid. "My goal was to create something that could be used in gardening," he explained. "You dissolve it in water, put it in your garden, and it acts as mulch."

To bring his idea to fruition, Narayanan has been experimenting with prototypes made from byproducts of flax and hemp, sourced from local farms and tribal communities. According to Narayanan, these materials are often discarded or burned. By repurposing these byproducts, he aims to produce cost-efficient, eco-friendly products while simultaneously supporting local communities.

"Why not make use of something that is going to waste and find a secondary use to help farmers, society, the state, and the economy?" Narayanan asked. This question highlights his commitment to not only reducing waste but also enhancing the economic well-being of his community.

While the concept of repurposing hemp is not entirely new—Fargo developers built a hempcrete home in 2022, using a mix of shredded hemp core and lime—Narayanan's focus is on creating sustainable packaging materials that are both recyclable and environmentally friendly. Unlike cardboard, which, while recyclable, often comes from deforestation, or plastic packaging, which is non-recyclable and detrimental to the environment, Narayanan’s packaging offers a viable alternative.

By integrating these sustainable practices, Narayanan is making strides towards reducing environmental impact while supporting local economies. His innovative approach reflects a growing trend in sustainable development, blending environmental responsibility with economic growth.
