Eco-Friendly E-Commerce Revolution: Amazon's Climate-Tech Startup Accelerator

Amazon is once again at the forefront of sustainability with its latest initiative: the Amazon Sustainability Accelerator. This groundbreaking program aims to propel climate-tech startups focused on revolutionizing packaging and the circular economy to new heights.

In collaboration with EIT Climate-KIC and Founders Intelligence, Amazon's Sustainability Accelerator offers selected startups unparalleled support. Since its inception in 2022, the accelerator has nurtured over 25 startups across the UK and EU, providing substantial grants and credits totaling over US$1 million. These startups have not only experienced a remarkable 700% increase in sales but have also collectively raised an impressive €18.7 million (US$20.3 million) in funding.

The expanded accelerator is now open for applications from startups dedicated to four key categories: packaging, consumer products, circular economy, and energy in buildings. This move reflects Amazon's commitment to fostering innovation in sustainable practices across various sectors.

Zak Watts, Amazon's Director of Sustainability in Europe, expresses his enthusiasm for the accelerator's evolution, stating, "Our aim is for the Amazon Sustainability Accelerator to be the best place in the world for entrepreneurs to create cutting-edge sustainable products and technologies." With a focus on supporting later-stage startups, Amazon aims to empower entrepreneurs to realize the potential of a more sustainable economy.

Selected startups will receive comprehensive support, including mentorship, workshops, and access to Amazon's Sustainability and Climate Pledge teams. They will also undergo a Climate Impact Assessment in collaboration with EIT Climate-KIC, guiding them in assessing their environmental footprint and developing strategies for improvement. Additionally, startups will receive grants and Amazon Web Services (AWS) credits, providing vital resources for their growth and development.

A new addition to the accelerator is the ClimateTech Pilot Challenge, designed for startups beyond the prototype stage. These startups will have the opportunity to pitch for the chance to collaborate directly with Amazon on pilot projects, potentially earning substantial funding ranging from US$50,000 to US$2 million.

The accelerator welcomes startups across various sectors, including those focused on innovative packaging materials, sustainable consumer products, solutions for extending product lifecycles, and decarbonization technologies for buildings. Kirsten Dunlop, CEO of EIT Climate-KIC, emphasizes the program's broadened scope, aimed at fostering impact-driven entrepreneurship for a more sustainable future.

Applications for the first cohort focused on the circular economy, energy in buildings, and packaging are open until April 5th, 2024, with successful applicants announced in the spring. The deadline for the second cohort focused on consumer products is July 31st, 2024, with successful applicants announced in the autumn.

Startups passionate about driving sustainability forward are encouraged to apply online in the UK, Spain, Germany, Italy, France, and the Netherlands. Don't miss this opportunity to be part of the revolution in sustainable innovation led by Amazon's Sustainability Accelerator.
