The Fi Europe 2025 Food Manufacturing Award honored innovations in recyclable and digital-ready packaging, with Syntegon and Sabic leading the field in mono-material solutions.
At Fi Europe 2025, the spotlight was on sustainable innovation as the inaugural Food Manufacturing Award recognized groundbreaking developments in packaging and processing technologies. Hosted in Frankfurt, the award celebrated companies that demonstrated excellence in improving food manufacturing efficiency, safety, and environmental impact—with a strong emphasis on packaging innovation.
The top prize was awarded to Syntegon Technology and partner Sabic for their collaborative mono-material packaging solution. The system, designed for easy recyclability, replaces conventional multilayer laminates with a recyclable, PE-based alternative suitable for various dry food applications. The judges highlighted its readiness for industrial scaling and its significant contribution to reducing packaging waste.
Other finalists included:
- CSB-System SE – recognized for its digital traceability platform that links packaging operations with sustainability metrics in real time
- FPT (Flexible Packaging Technologies) – praised for its high-barrier paper packaging format developed for powdered and dry mixes, offering a compostable alternative to plastic pouches
All submissions were evaluated on criteria such as technological innovation, environmental impact, scalability, and readiness for industry deployment. The focus on packaging reflects the sector’s shift toward circular economy principles, particularly in food categories where shelf-life and barrier protection remain critical.
The judging panel noted a significant trend: the integration of advanced materials with digital infrastructure to improve sustainability and transparency. For example, CSB-System’s entry demonstrated how production data from packaging lines can feed into carbon tracking systems and support EPR compliance reporting.
The Fi Europe Food Manufacturing Award reinforces the importance of cross-sector collaboration in developing next-generation packaging solutions. The winning entry by Syntegon and Sabic represents a successful alignment between packaging equipment providers and material innovators—an approach increasingly seen as essential in overcoming regulatory and environmental challenges.
With the food industry under mounting pressure to reduce plastic use and carbon emissions, packaging innovation continues to be a defining area of progress. Events like Fi Europe provide a platform to spotlight scalable, science-driven solutions that can shift the packaging industry toward more sustainable practices.
