Metsä Board will present its sustainable packaging innovations, including upgraded paperboard coatings and 360 Services, at FACHPACK 2025 in Nuremberg this September.

Metsä Board to Highlight Sustainable Paperboards and 360 Services at FACHPACK 2025

Metsä Board, a leading European producer of fresh fibre paperboards and a part of the Metsä Group, is set to showcase its innovative packaging solutions at FACHPACK 2025, taking place from 23–25 September in Nuremberg, Germany (Hall 4A, Stand 116). With a spotlight on sustainability, performance, and partnership, Metsä Board’s presence aims to underline its commitment to transforming packaging through innovation and collaboration.

A key highlight of Metsä Board’s presentation is its EUR 60 million investment in the Simpele mill, where a cutting-edge coating line is scheduled to begin operations in October 2025. This strategic upgrade will significantly enhance print quality and packaging functionality, particularly for food and pharmaceutical applications. More notably, the Simpele mill’s shift towards fossil-free production is expected to reach 98% fossil-free energy usage by the end of 2025—an important milestone toward the company’s ambitious 2030 fossil-free targets.

In an industry increasingly focused on Scope 3 emissions, Metsä Board’s solutions provide crucial value. Packaging often falls within brand owners’ Scope 3 emissions, making material choices pivotal in reducing a company’s carbon footprint. At FACHPACK, Metsä Board’s team will present third-party verified case studies to demonstrate how data-driven material choices can lead to lower emissions without compromising packaging performance.

FACHPACK is a key European event for engaging with packaging professionals and exploring the latest technologies and trends,” noted Marjo Halonen, VP Communications at Metsä Board. “We believe that advancing packaging sustainability and performance requires close collaboration across the entire value chain—from forest to end use.”

Metsä Board’s 360 Services will also be featured prominently. These include tools and strategies such as:

  • Life Cycle Assessments (LCA): Helping brands quantify the environmental impacts of packaging materials.
  • Lightweighting strategies: Optimizing material usage while maintaining performance.
  • Design partnerships: Collaborating on innovative packaging concepts from ideation to production.

Visitors to the stand will explore the full range of Metsä Board’s premium offerings, including folding boxboards, white kraftliners, and food service boards. These materials are engineered to meet high-performance requirements while offering improved recyclability, lower emissions, and reduced weight.

Metsä Board’s participation in FACHPACK 2025 is not merely an exhibition—it’s a call to industry stakeholders to engage in collective action. By integrating advanced materials, eco-friendly production processes, and intelligent design services, Metsä Board is helping shape the future of sustainable packaging in Europe and beyond.

As environmental regulations tighten and consumer expectations rise, events like FACHPACK offer vital platforms for companies to demonstrate leadership. Metsä Board's approach—rooted in innovation, transparency, and sustainability—sets a high bar for the packaging industry at large.
