The World Packaging Organisation has launched World Packaging Day to highlight packaging’s contribution to food safety, sustainability, innovation and global economic development.
The World Packaging Organisation (WPO) has announced the launch of the first-ever World Packaging Day, which will be celebrated annually on 6 September. The initiative aims to raise awareness of the essential role packaging plays in modern society, from protecting products and extending shelf life to supporting international trade and improving sustainability.
Although packaging is often associated with waste, the WPO argues that it should also be recognised for the value it delivers throughout global supply chains. Every day, packaging enables the safe transport, storage and distribution of billions of products, helping to reduce food losses, protect medical supplies and improve access to essential goods. The organisation believes these contributions deserve greater public recognition and a dedicated day of celebration.
Recognising packaging beyond the productAccording to the WPO, packaging is much more than a container. It is a critical component of manufacturing, logistics and retail operations, ensuring products arrive safely while maintaining their quality and usability. Effective packaging can extend shelf life, minimise damage during transport and reduce unnecessary waste throughout the supply chain.
The organisation also highlights packaging's contribution to economic development by supporting global commerce, strengthening brands and enabling more efficient distribution networks. As supply chains become increasingly international and consumer expectations continue to evolve, packaging is playing a more strategic role than ever before.
Four themes for the inaugural celebrationTo mark the first World Packaging Day, the WPO has identified four key themes that reflect the industry's wider contribution to society. The first, Packaging for Progress, focuses on improving quality of life through better access to products and services. Packaging Against Food Waste highlights how modern packaging technologies help preserve freshness and extend food safety. Packaging and Economic Growth explores the industry's role in supporting businesses, trade and innovation, while Packaging and Sustainability will showcase advances in circular design, material efficiency and responsible manufacturing.
The organisation is encouraging its members, industry associations, manufacturers, brand owners and educational institutions to organise local events, workshops and awareness campaigns that demonstrate the importance of packaging to everyday life.
Building a more informed conversationAs governments introduce new regulations and sustainability targets, the packaging industry continues to face growing public scrutiny. World Packaging Day aims to broaden that conversation by highlighting not only the environmental challenges associated with packaging, but also its role in reducing food waste, improving product safety and enabling more resilient supply chains. Through greater collaboration across the value chain, the WPO hopes the annual event will encourage innovation, promote responsible packaging design and foster a better understanding of the industry's contribution to society.
