Fraunhofer’s AI Application Hub promotes sustainable packaging by integrating industry data and AI-driven design for eco-friendly plastic packaging.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV has recently introduced an innovative initiative known as the AI Application Hub for Plastic Packaging, marking a pivotal advancement in the packaging industry. This cutting-edge project, backed by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Research and Education, involves a diverse consortium of over 51 partners from various sectors, including academia, industry, and technology providers. Together, these partners are developing state-of-the-art, AI-driven solutions aimed at enhancing the sustainability, efficiency, and recyclability of plastic packaging in response to the growing demand for eco-friendly options.
The AI Application Hub comprises two specialized laboratories, KIOptiPack and K3I-Cycling, each focused on distinct aspects of sustainable packaging design. KIOptiPack is dedicated to optimizing the design and manufacturing processes of plastic packaging by using advanced AI algorithms. This lab introduces an AI-based software solution that functions much like a GPS system for packaging design, assisting manufacturers in making informed decisions that minimize material usage and reduce environmental impacts. Through KIOptiPack’s AI-driven approach, companies can model and predict packaging performance, identify potential improvements, and select materials that are more environmentally friendly while ensuring product safety and quality.
The K3I-Cycling lab, on the other hand, concentrates on developing circular solutions by integrating recycled materials into new packaging designs without compromising on functionality or durability.
