Babybel begins the transition from cellophane to recyclable paper packaging, with a global rollout expected by 2027, marking a significant step toward sustainability.
Bel Group announced the global rollout of a new recyclable paper packaging for Babybel cheese products. By 2027, all Babybel products, manufactured at five industrial sites and distributed in 50 countries, will be offered with responsibly sourced paper. This marks a major milestone in the company’s commitment to sustainability and packaging innovation.
Transitioning from Bio-Based Cellophane to Paper
Since late 2020, Babybel has used bio-based, home-compostable cellophane, but transitioning to paper packaging represents a significant technical and industrial challenge. This shift is the result of years of research and development, with a focus on maintaining product quality, microbiological safety, and temperature resilience. The change is not just about swapping materials; it requires rethinking the entire protection system.
Why Paper Packaging?
Paper packaging is being implemented as part of Babybel's broader sustainability strategy. The company aims for 100% of its packaging to be ready for recycling or compostable by 2030. The introduction of paper packaging in Babybel is not simply a material switch; it’s about meeting consumer expectations for more sustainable and environmentally responsible packaging.
Global Rollout and Timeline
The commercial rollout of Babybel’s paper packaging began in the United Kingdom. The United States, Canada, and Northern Europe will follow in 2026, with a full global expansion across all 50 markets starting in 2027. By this time, all Mini Babybel products will feature certified paper packaging, ensuring sustainable forest management and full traceability.
The Role of the Red Wax Shell
While the transition to paper packaging is a significant change, Babybel’s iconic red wax shell remains unchanged. The wax shell continues to play an essential role in protecting the product, preserving its integrity, and ensuring the quality and taste remain intact.
Challenges and Innovations in Packaging
Delphine Chatelin, director of RID at Bel Group, highlighted that the shift to paper packaging is a true technical and industrial challenge. The company’s goal is to provide consumers with the same iconic experience, while offering a packaging solution that is both sustainable and perfectly adapted to the product’s lifecycle. This transition requires balancing protection, functionality, and sustainability in a way that has never been done before in the food packaging industry.
Sustainability Goals and Impact
By 2027, Babybel products in 50 countries will transition to paper packaging made from responsibly sourced materials. The paper packaging will be fully recyclable, in line with Bel’s sustainability goals, which include achieving 100% recyclable or home-compostable packaging by 2030. The initiative will reduce plastic waste and is expected to have a significant positive impact on the environment, aligning with global trends toward sustainable packaging solutions.
