Berry Global and VOID Technologies have developed a recyclable polyethylene film for pet food packaging, offering enhanced toughness and reduced plastic usage.

Berry Global and VOID Technologies Introduce Recyclable PE Film for Pet Food Packaging

Berry Global and VOID Technologies have jointly developed an innovative polyethylene (PE) film designed specifically for pet food packaging. This new solution offers enhanced toughness and puncture resistance, making it suitable for store drop-off recycling and addressing the industry's need to eliminate non-recyclable materials.

The collaboration leverages VOID's patented VO+ technology, particularly its 1300 Series PE Voiding Agents, alongside Berry Global's proprietary film formulation and Machine Direction Orientation (MDO) process expertise. This combination creates cavitated micro-scale air pockets within the film, effectively reducing plastic density while enhancing opacity.

One of the key advantages of this technology is its ability to produce high-performance films using less plastic, thereby reducing CO2 emissions and waste. Importantly, these films comply with direct food contact standards in both North America and Europe, ensuring their safety for packaging applications.

The VO+ cavitated film structure significantly improves toughness, making it ideal for high-abuse, demanding applications commonly found in flexible packaging. Additionally, VO+ enables plastic reduction, density reduction, and high opacity without the need for pigments, resulting in higher-yield PE-based films that contribute to more sustainable, mono-material, recycle-ready packaging solutions.

Caleb Triplett, Berry's Director of Product Management for Flexible Packaging, emphasized the importance of such collaborations: "Collaborations, like the one with VOID, enable Berry to meet the growing demand for high-performance and sustainable film solutions with robust technologies. Pet food applications present unique challenges due to demanding physical and organoleptic requirements, and this highlights the individual capabilities of both Berry and VOID, but more importantly, the power of our combined expertise."

This development aligns with the packaging industry's broader efforts to enhance sustainability by creating recyclable packaging solutions that do not compromise on performance. By focusing on mono-material constructions, companies like Berry and VOID are contributing to a circular economy, where materials can be reused and recycled more efficiently.

In related developments, other industry players are also making strides in sustainable pet food packaging. For instance, Siegwerk applied its CIRKIT functional coatings to a mono-PE bag developed with Windmöller & Hölscher and B&B in April, aiming for a high-barrier, fully recyclable packaging solution for dry pet food.

These advancements reflect a growing trend in the packaging industry towards developing solutions that meet both performance and environmental criteria, ensuring that products are protected while minimizing their ecological footprint.
