Private equity firm Butterfly Equity has completed the acquisition of ePac Flexible Packaging, strengthening its position in digitally printed flexible packaging for food and CPG brands.

Butterfly Equity Acquires ePac Flexible Packaging to Accelerate Digital Packaging Growth

Butterfly Equity, a Los Angeles-based private equity firm focused on the food and beverage sector, has completed the acquisition of ePac Holdings, a global producer of digitally printed flexible packaging. The transaction sees Butterfly acquire the company from its investor consortium, which included major industry players such as Amcor and Indevco North America. While the financial terms were not disclosed, the deal marks Butterfly’s first platform investment in the packaging sector.

Founded in 2016, ePac has quickly established itself as a disruptive force in the flexible packaging market, particularly serving fast-growing consumer packaged goods (CPG) brands. The company is known for its digitally printed packaging solutions that enable shorter runs, faster turnaround times, and greater flexibility compared with traditional packaging models. Food and beverage brands represent a core end market for ePac, aligning closely with Butterfly Equity’s sector expertise.

A key differentiator for ePac is its proprietary technology platform, ePacONE, which underpins the company’s order-to-demand production model across its global network. This technology allows brands to streamline ordering, reduce inventory risk, and respond more rapidly to market changes. By combining digital printing with a technology-driven operating model, ePac has helped redefine how flexible packaging is produced and delivered.

In North America, ePac operates 14 facilities across the United States and Canada. These sites offer customers automated quoting, consistent quality, and rapid lead times, supporting both emerging and established brands. Following the acquisition, the existing leadership team, led by CEO and co-founder Virag Patel, will remain in place and has retained a significant ownership stake, ensuring continuity of strategy and operations.

“By partnering with Butterfly, we enter a new phase of acceleration,” said Virag Patel. He highlighted Butterfly’s strong connectivity within the food and beverage ecosystem as a key advantage, noting that the partnership will support continued investment in next-generation technologies and platforms while maintaining ePac’s customer-centric approach.

From Butterfly’s perspective, the acquisition reflects the growing strategic importance of packaging within the food value chain. Vishal Patel, partner and head of the investment team at Butterfly, described packaging as a critical enabler for food brands and emphasized ePac’s established leadership in digitally printed flexible packaging. Butterfly believes its deep sector expertise will help drive ePac’s next phase of growth.

Industry observers see the transaction as part of a broader trend of consolidation and private equity investment in packaging technologies that support agility, customization, and speed. As brand owners increasingly seek flexible, data-driven, and digitally enabled packaging solutions, ePac’s model positions it well to benefit from these shifts.

With Butterfly’s backing, ePac is expected to further scale its platform, expand its geographic footprint, and continue investing in digital innovation. The acquisition underlines how technology-driven flexible packaging is becoming a central pillar of modern CPG supply chains, particularly in food and beverage markets where speed to market and brand differentiation are critical.
