Coveris introduces MonoFlexBP, a resealable mono-material tray for chilled foods, combining recyclability, shelf-life protection, and consumer convenience.

Coveris Launches MonoFlexBP: A Resealable Mono-Material Tray for Refrigerated Foods

Coveris has unveiled a significant step forward in sustainable packaging with the launch of MonoFlexBP, a mono-material tray solution designed specifically for refrigerated food applications. The innovation aims to replace traditional non-recyclable, multi-material packaging formats, offering both environmental benefits and functional performance tailored to the chilled food sector.

MonoFlexBP is engineered as a resealable polypropylene (PP) tray that addresses several of today’s packaging challenges. Its fully recyclable structure eliminates the typical combination of plastics that often hinder recycling efforts. Instead, the tray maintains high product protection, shelf-life preservation, and consumer usability, which are critical for refrigerated items such as processed meats, dairy, cheese, and sausages.

At the heart of the MonoFlexBP solution is a recloseable sealing system that allows consumers to open and reseal the packaging multiple times. This not only enhances convenience but also supports efforts to reduce food waste by maintaining freshness after opening. The system is paired with Coveris’ advanced thermoformable bottom films, offering flexibility in product presentation while safeguarding contents under chilled conditions.

For applications that require a high oxygen barrier, Coveris offers a complementary PET- and PA-free lidding film designed to seal, peel, and reseal on PP trays. This enhances the recyclability of the full pack and aligns with circular economy goals by ensuring compatibility across the entire packaging system.

“With this sustainable alternative to non-recyclable materials, Coveris continues to lead the way in circular packaging innovation, offering high-performance solutions that address both environmental impact and consumer demand,” said Katja Killian, BU Flexibles Business Development Director at Coveris.

The MonoFlexBP tray system also addresses aesthetic and branding requirements. Trays can be printed using gravure or flexographic printing and are available with special finishes such as matt or paper-effect lacquer. These options enhance visual appeal on retail shelves while maintaining brand integrity in eco-conscious packaging formats.

This innovation is particularly significant in light of increasing regulatory and consumer pressure to reduce packaging waste and increase the recyclability of materials. Traditional mixed-material trays are difficult to process in standard recycling systems due to their composite layers, often ending up in landfill. By offering a mono-material alternative that performs equally well, Coveris bridges the gap between sustainability and performance.

MonoFlexBP also aligns with EU-wide goals and industry commitments toward increasing the recyclability of plastic packaging. As packaging design becomes a central lever in reducing environmental impact, solutions like this are increasingly valuable to brands seeking to meet eco-design requirements without compromising on functionality.

With the launch of MonoFlexBP, Coveris cements its role as a forward-thinking packaging innovator, offering commercially viable, circular-ready formats tailored to the evolving needs of food manufacturers and retailers. This solution is yet another example of how design for recyclability and consumer usability can coexist in modern packaging systems.
