Diageo focuses on reducing its carbon footprint by adopting sustainable packaging, including paper and recycled aluminium, while cutting down on single-use plastics.
Diageo is intensifying efforts to reduce its Scope 3 emissions by focusing on sustainable packaging solutions. Packaging accounts for about a third of the company's carbon footprint, so Diageo is prioritizing material reductions and shifting to eco-friendly alternatives like paper and recycled aluminium. Recent trials with Baileys minis and aluminium bottles have yielded significant carbon savings, with up to 50% fewer emissions compared to conventional plastic packaging.
The company has also partnered with EcoSpirits to tackle single-use plastics for key brands like Smirnoff and Captain Morgan. Through the use of reusable containers, they aim to drastically cut down on glass bottle usage. Diageo’s sustainability drive extends globally, with the company adapting to regional recycling regulations and working closely with NGOs like Wrap to expand its recycling infrastructure.
By 2030, Diageo aims to achieve a 10% reduction in packaging weight, contributing both to environmental goals and enhancing consumer convenience with lighter packaging.
