Graphic Packaging and Zelestra launch a smart-integrated 50.4 MW solar farm in Spain, showcasing how renewable energy innovation can transform packaging operations.
Graphic Packaging Integrates Renewable Innovation with 50.4 MW Solar Farm
In a breakthrough for industrial energy innovation, Graphic Packaging International and Zelestra have launched a 50.4 MW solar farm in Spain, designed to supply clean power directly to packaging production. This move marks a pivotal moment where energy tech and packaging innovation intersect to advance both efficiency and decarbonisation.
Located in Castilla-La Mancha, the solar facility includes over 92,000 photovoltaic panels and incorporates smart grid and real-time optimisation systems. These allow Graphic Packaging to monitor energy performance, carbon offsets, and integrate clean energy seamlessly into their operational workflows.
Beyond producing more than 90,000 MWh annually, the solar farm functions as an energy innovation lab for Graphic Packaging’s European network. The system dynamically adjusts to consumption patterns, feeding electricity into core paperboard packaging operations while collecting performance analytics for future system upgrades.
“This isn’t just a renewable power project—it’s an intelligent infrastructure designed to scale with our production demands and sustainability goals,” said a company executive. “It redefines how packaging manufacturing connects to energy innovation.”
One standout innovation is the real-time carbon tracking capability, enabling detailed reporting aligned with Scope 2 emission metrics and ESG frameworks. By merging data transparency with operational control, the plant supports both compliance and innovation in equal measure.
This vertical integration of renewable energy into industrial packaging supply chains exemplifies a growing trend where packaging firms invest directly in energy technologies to future-proof operations. Graphic Packaging aims to use insights from this solar deployment to develop scalable templates for other production sites globally.
Spain, with its favourable solar conditions and progressive energy regulation, provided an ideal setting for piloting this type of advanced energy ecosystem. The project was completed in under a year, thanks to collaborative engineering between Zelestra and regional grid authorities.
With energy costs rising and sustainability mandates tightening, Graphic Packaging’s solar integration demonstrates how companies can lead through energy-led innovation. The success of this initiative is already attracting attention from other industries looking to embed clean, intelligent power systems into their core operations.
