IHMA broadens membership to OVD suppliers, enhancing global hologram industry's role in security printing and authentication tech.

Expanding Membership Criteria: IHMA Welcomes All OVD Suppliers

The International Hologram Manufacturers Association (IHMA), the leading trade body for the global hologram industry, has broadened its membership criteria to adapt to the rapidly evolving sector.

Initially exclusive to hologram suppliers, the IHMA is now open to applications from all security Optical Variable Device (OVD) suppliers. This strategic move aims to strengthen the IHMA's position as a premier authority on commercial authentication, ID security, and packaging augmentation technologies.

The expansion of membership extends beyond hologram suppliers to include providers of materials, equipment, finishers, and converters. Additionally, associate membership has been redefined to allow research organizations and other trade associations to leverage the IHMA's pioneering work in developing new applications and opening new markets for holograms.

Reflecting the changing landscape of the global security printing industry, the Hologram Image Register has been revamped as the Security Image Register (SIR). This transformation underscores the evolving dynamics of security features, encompassing all optically variable security features.

Anticipated advancements in anti-counterfeit technologies, including micro-lenses, micro-mirrors, and plasmonics, are poised to reshape the industry. These innovations will require new foils, manufacturing processes, and originating technologies, propelling the growth of holograms in the coming years.

Mark Deakes, Chair of IHMA, remarked, "In these exciting times for holography, the IHMA board decided to extend full membership to all OVD suppliers. This decision mirrors the evolving dynamics of the global hologram and security print industries, where holograms are increasingly integrated with other optically variable devices to offer advanced anti-counterfeiting solutions."

Deakes continued, "The revamped SIR represents a significant step forward, accurately reflecting the design and usage of holograms and other OVDs. This undoubtedly facilitates an increase in image registrations, ensuring their integrity and security."
