i2r Packaging Solutions launches Dimple Base Tray for meat and seafood, replacing absorbent pads to improve recyclability, reduce waste, and increase tray strength.

i2r Dimple Base Tray Enhances Recyclability by Eliminating Absorbent Pads

i2r Packaging Solutions has introduced the Dimple Base Tray, an aluminium meat and seafood tray designed to replace hard-to-recycle absorbent pads. The tray features an engineered base that captures and retains liquids within the tray itself, combining the traditional tray and pad into a single unit.

Testing shows the Dimple Base Tray can hold up to 16ml of liquid and match conventional pad performance while offering 30% greater strength than standard trays. The simplified structure improves recyclability, reduces waste, and enhances packaging durability. i2r reports that aluminium is one of the most recyclable materials globally and aims for 90% recycled content in its smoothwall trays by the end of 2026, up from 54%.

Following successful trials with the Dimple Base profile, i2r plans to expand the technology to additional tray formats and fresh food applications.

Tom Cliffe, i2r Sales Director, noted: “The Dimple Base Tray demonstrates how intelligent design can simplify packaging, improve recyclability and deliver practical benefits for manufacturers, retailers and consumers alike. Even small design changes can have a significant impact given the billions of fresh meat and seafood packs produced annually.”

Similar industry innovations include Sirane’s Earthpad, Elliott Absorbent Products’ UniDry pads, Faerch and Norfersk’s 70% recycled PET meat trays, and Flatlantic’s use of BEWI certified recycled EPS boxes for shipping fresh flatfish, all aimed at improving sustainability and reducing carbon footprints in fresh food packaging.
