Recognized for their remarkable Twisty Ice Cream Boxes, this collaborative effort showcases groundbreaking advancements in flexographic printing and sustainable packaging design.

By leveraging the expertise of industry leaders, Metsä Board embarked on a journey to revolutionize ice cream cone packaging. The project encompassed a comprehensive exploration of the value chain, from material sourcing to printing techniques and logistics optimization. Through meticulous research and innovation, the team unveiled a new realm of possibilities, utilizing lightweight fresh fibre materials and state-of-the-art flexographic printing methods to deliver unparalleled usability and breathtaking halftone graphics at an extraordinary 188 lpi print resolution.

At the helm of this pioneering endeavor were packaging designers from Futupack, alongside Adara Pakkaus, Marvaco, Siegwerk (ink supplier), and Dr. Kai Lankinen (ECG printing specialist), who provided invaluable insights and guidance throughout the project.

MetsäBoard Prime WKL, weighing in at 125 gsm, was selected as the top liner for its lightweight composition and smooth surface, ensuring impeccable reproduction of intricate visuals. Complementing this was MetsäBoard Natural WKL Bright 90 gsm, chosen for its exceptional strength and suitability for compact and lightweight packaging. Crafted from pure and traceable fresh wood fibre, these materials not only guarantee recyclability and compostability but also uphold the highest standards of food safety.

Furthermore, the team prioritized ink efficiency without compromising on brand recognition. Opting for process printing over spot colors, they achieved enhanced efficiency and flexibility while maintaining the distinct identity of each ice cream variety. The user-friendly design of the packaging eliminates the need for additional plastic components or specialized tools, enhancing both convenience and sustainability.
