The LEGO Group has begun implementing paper-based bags in its sets, advancing its commitment to eliminating single-use plastics and promoting environmental sustainability.
The LEGO Group has initiated the rollout of paper-based bags in its sets, marking a significant advancement in its commitment to sustainability. This transition is part of LEGO's broader strategy to eliminate single-use plastics from its packaging and enhance environmental responsibility.
After evaluating 180 different paper types and formats, LEGO selected a durable, recyclable paper bag that meets its high standards for quality and functionality. These bags are designed to withstand the manufacturing process and the rigors of global distribution, ensuring that LEGO bricks arrive intact to consumers worldwide.
Annette Stube, Chief Sustainability Officer at LEGO, emphasized the importance of this initiative:
“I’m excited to share our progress moving to paper-based bags in LEGO sets – taking out single-use packaging. We are not finished yet, but our team of clever and creative colleagues are working hard globally to make this important transition happen.”
The new paper bags are currently included in sets across Europe and Asia, with plans to expand to the Americas. They are verified recyclable in the European Union, United States, and Canada, aligning with LEGO's goal for all packaging to be made from renewable or recycled materials certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.
This initiative is part of LEGO's comprehensive sustainability strategy, which includes:
- Replacing plastic cups in LEGO Pick a Brick with flat-pack paper containers.
- Switching Build a Minifigure packaging from plastic to recyclable cardboard.
- Phasing out single-use plastic retail bags in stores since 2020.
By implementing these changes, LEGO aims to reduce its environmental impact and meet the growing consumer demand for sustainable products. The transition to paper-based bags not only supports environmental goals but also enhances the unboxing experience for consumers, adding an element of surprise and engagement.
