L'Oréal’s L'AcceleratOR programme has selected 13 start-ups working on scalable sustainable solutions in packaging, ingredients, and the circular economy, with €100 million in funding.

L'Oréal Backs 13 Start-ups Through €100 Million Sustainable Innovation Accelerator

L'Oréal’s L'AcceleratOR programme has committed €100 million to back 13 start-ups driving sustainable innovations in the beauty industry. These start-ups, chosen from over 1,000 entries across more than 100 countries, are working on scalable solutions that address urgent challenges in climate change, nature preservation, and circularity. The selected companies are focused on groundbreaking innovations in packaging, ingredients, and the circular economy, all crucial to L'Oréal's ambitious sustainability goals.

The L'AcceleratOR programme, running in partnership with the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL), aims to provide intensive support to these start-ups as they develop pilot projects. These projects will focus on creating scalable sustainable solutions that could potentially be scaled across the global beauty industry. The 13 start-ups will receive tailored guidance during a pilot phase lasting 6-9 months, with the possibility of scaling internationally.

Among the selected start-ups, there are companies working on a variety of exciting innovations. For instance, Kelpi (UK) is creating recyclable, low-carbon packaging using seaweed, while Bioworks (Japan) is producing bioplastics from sugarcane and other plant-based materials. Blue Ocean Closures (Sweden) is pioneering fibre-based caps and lids as a plastic alternative, and Pulpex (UK) is developing next-generation recyclable paper bottles.

Other innovative companies include PULPAC (Sweden), which focuses on low-carbon, paper-based packaging processes, and RAIKU (Estonia), which turns natural wood into high-end, shock-absorbing protective packaging. Several start-ups, such as Oberon Fuels (USA), are working on converting wood and pulp waste into renewable ingredients for beauty formulations, while Novobiom (Belgium) is using fungi to turn complex waste into high-value products.

In addition to these packaging and ingredients innovations, the programme is also supporting circular solutions, such as Neutreeno (UK), a digital system designed to help companies calculate and reduce emissions in their supply chains, and Gàs Verde (Brazil), which is producing biomethane to replace fossil fuels in industrial processes and transportation.

Ezgi Barcenas, L'Oréal’s Chief Corporate Responsibility Officer, said, “We are energised to be co-designing the future of beauty with the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership and these 13 change makers. Their innovative solutions are key to accelerating the transition to a more sustainable and circular beauty industry.”

L'Oréal’s L'AcceleratOR programme represents a significant step in the company’s ongoing efforts to lead the beauty industry toward a more sustainable future. By providing financial support, global resources, and expertise, L'Oréal is helping these start-ups scale their innovations, bringing them closer to market readiness and helping them tackle some of the most pressing environmental challenges facing the industry today.

James Cole, Chief Innovation Officer at CISL, noted, “At CISL, we are proud to partner with L'Oréal, a group with a long track record of delivering disruptive innovation at scale. By elevating these scalable solutions to the world stage, we are not just making a sustainable future a goal, but a reality.”
