Mondi and traceless develop a biocircular coating for Kraft paper, reducing emissions by 76% and offering home compostability, setting new sustainability standards in packaging.
Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, has partnered with traceless, an innovative company specializing in sustainable materials, to develop a biocircular coating solution for Kraft paper. This groundbreaking innovation aims to replace traditional varnishes with a coating derived from agricultural by-products.
Made from renewable plant materials, this biocircular solution significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions and is home compostable. The collaboration between Mondi and traceless began in 2021, focusing on creating a coated Kraft paper that resists water, oxygen, and grease while maintaining excellent printability.
"We are always looking for the next steps in creating truly circular packaging, following the demands of our customers and our own innovative spirit. This is a fantastic example of how we can combine our R&D strengths to stay ahead in the sustainable packaging game, contributing to a circular economy," says Marko Schuster, COO Functional Paper and Films at Mondi.
A life cycle assessment has shown that using this material as a substitute for virgin PET results in an overall greenhouse gas savings of 76% from cradle to grave. When considering only the production and disposal phases, the savings amount to 95%. Additionally, the material is certified as home compostable by DIN CERTCO in accordance with NF T51-800 standards.
The goal of this collaboration is to create a scalable and recyclable solution for various markets, thereby reducing emissions throughout the packaging lifecycle. By leveraging their combined expertise, Mondi and traceless are setting a new standard for sustainability in the packaging industry.
The innovative biocircular coating not only addresses environmental concerns but also meets the high performance standards required for modern packaging. The material’s ability to resist water, oxygen, and grease makes it suitable for a wide range of applications, ensuring that products remain protected and fresh throughout their shelf life.
"This partnership is a testament to our commitment to sustainability and innovation," adds Schuster. "By developing materials that are both high-performing and environmentally friendly, we are paving the way for the future of packaging."
Mondi and traceless are dedicated to driving positive environmental impact through their innovative solutions. The biocircular coating for Kraft paper is a significant step towards reducing the reliance on traditional, non-renewable materials and promoting a more sustainable, circular economy.
As the packaging industry continues to evolve, the demand for sustainable solutions is greater than ever. Consumers and businesses alike are increasingly aware of the environmental impact of their choices, and companies like Mondi and traceless are at the forefront of providing viable alternatives that do not compromise on performance or quality.
