Siegwerk acquires Hi-Tech Inks to expand its presence in India’s flexible packaging market, enhancing its portfolio of sustainable inks and coatings solutions.
The global packaging industry continues to consolidate as companies expand their capabilities to meet rising demand for performance and sustainability. In this context, Siegwerk, a leading German manufacturer of printing inks and coatings, has announced the acquisition of Indian-based Hi-Tech Inks, strengthening its position in one of the world’s fastest-growing packaging markets.
The acquisition significantly enhances Siegwerk’s footprint in India by integrating Hi-Tech Inks’ production facilities in Bhiwadi and Vapi, alongside its established customer base and technical expertise. With this move, Siegwerk expands its portfolio to include water-based and solvent-based inks, metallic and specialty effect coatings, and overprint varnishes (OPVs), reinforcing its capabilities across the flexible packaging segment.
India’s packaging market—particularly flexible packaging—is experiencing rapid growth, driven by increasing consumption, urbanisation, and demand for sustainable materials. Following the acquisition, Siegwerk is expected to hold over 20% market share in the Indian flexible packaging inks sector, positioning it as a leading supplier in the region.
This strategic move reflects the growing importance of regional expansion and portfolio diversification in the global packaging value chain.
Beyond scale, the acquisition aligns with Siegwerk’s long-term strategy to strengthen its presence across Asia-Pacific. The combined organisation will employ approximately 1,700 people, enabling improved operational efficiency, faster customer response, and greater innovation capacity. The integration also supports closer collaboration with local converters and brand owners navigating evolving regulatory and sustainability requirements.
A key element of the deal is its contribution to sustainable packaging development. Siegwerk has been actively promoting circular solutions through its “rethINK packaging” initiative, focusing on recyclable materials, low-impact inks, and safer chemical formulations. By incorporating Hi-Tech Inks’ capabilities, the company aims to accelerate innovation in eco-friendly coatings and printing technologies.
The expansion of water-based ink systems is particularly relevant, as these solutions offer reduced volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions compared to solvent-based alternatives. At the same time, maintaining a diversified portfolio allows Siegwerk to serve a wide range of applications, from food packaging to industrial uses, where performance requirements vary.
From an industry perspective, the acquisition highlights the increasing consolidation within the packaging supply chain, where material suppliers are scaling operations to better support global brands and local converters. It also underscores the strategic importance of India as a manufacturing and consumption hub for packaging materials.
As demand for high-performance, sustainable packaging continues to grow, investments such as this are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the competitive landscape. By combining local expertise with global innovation capabilities, Siegwerk is positioning itself to address emerging challenges and opportunities in the evolving packaging ecosystem.
