SIG's aluminium-free Terra carton wins the Green Packaging Star Award, recognizing sustainable packaging advancements and environmental responsibility in the industry.
Pan-European sustainable solutions provider SIG has been honored with the Green Packaging Star Award for its innovative SIG Terra Alu-free packaging solution. Recognized as the world’s first aluminium-free material for aseptic carton packs, this achievement underscores SIG’s commitment to sustainable packaging.
The Green Packaging Star Award, an annual accolade presented by Kompack magazine and the Austrian Research Institute of Chemistry, highlights excellence in sustainable packaging design and environmental responsibility. By receiving this award, SIG also qualifies for the prestigious WorldStar competition, organized by the World Packaging Organization.
Gmundner Dairy became the first Austrian company to adopt SIG Terra Alu-free, setting an industry example for eco-friendly practices. This solution has enabled the dairy to reduce its carbon footprint by up to 23% based on ISO-compliant life-cycle assessments. Since the adoption of this innovative packaging, Gmundner Dairy has saved more than 160 tonnes of CO₂ emissions, showcasing the significant environmental impact of the technology.
SIG's Terra Alu-free packaging is composed of up to 82% FSC-certified renewable paperboard, paired with ultra-thin polymer layers for product protection. This structure eliminates the need for aluminium, thus reducing the environmental impact while maintaining the required shelf life for aseptic packaging. The solution aligns with SIG’s long-term goals to reach a 90% paper content in its packaging by 2030, with an interim target of 85% by 2025.
Vanessa Bogner, SIG’s marketing manager for the D-A-CH region, expressed pride in the recognition, stating that the award highlights their ongoing progress in developing environmentally responsible packaging. Similarly, Christoph Engl, managing director of Gmundner Dairy, celebrated the award, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between SIG and Gmundner Dairy in setting new sustainability benchmarks for the market.
With consumers and retailers increasingly demanding eco-friendly options, SIG’s Terra Alu-free represents a crucial step towards more sustainable and lower-carbon packaging solutions that cater to these evolving preferences.
