SPS Pouches has launched mono-material PE spout pouches for refill packs up to 1.5 litres, giving brands a lightweight, e-commerce friendly format designed for recyclability, with reliable sealing performance and optional barrier upgrades.
The update reflects what brands have been asking for: refill packaging that stays lightweight, travels well through e-commerce, and is designed for recyclability, without losing the seal integrity and durability needed for liquid products.
“Refill pouches are one of the most direct ways for brands to reduce packaging weight versus rigid formats, but spouted refills have been difficult to deliver in mono-material PE without compromising on performance,” said Elliot Hyams, Director at SPS Pouches. “We’ve invested in getting the process window right so growing brands can access a refill format that’s commercially practical and aligned with where the industry is heading.”
What’s new
• Up to ~1.5 litre capacities (previously ~500 ml)
• Mono-material PE structure
• Finish options: matte, gloss, white or transparent
• Barrier upgrades available where needed (product dependent)
• Spout sizes to suit different filling approaches
Why it took time to get right
Spouted pouches demand more from sealing than many other flexible formats. With mono-material PE structures, the sealing window can be narrow: too much heat can distort the film and create weak points, too little heat and you don’t achieve a complete weld.
SPS Pouches says the breakthrough came from tightening control and repeatability across the process:
• finding a formulation that seals properly at lower temperatures
• controlling time and pressure so the film stays stable
• building repeatability into the process so seal strength is consistent
Supporting brands as refill moves mainstream
As the UK continues to improve the collection and recycling of household packaging, SPS Pouches expects refill formats to keep moving from niche to mainstream, particularly in categories where consumers already understand the refill proposition.
“Our role is to make sure startups and SMEs aren’t priced out of better packaging choices,” Hyams added. “Minimum order quantities and technical complexity can be a barrier. We help brands move forward in a way that works commercially, with packaging that’s fit for purpose first, and better aligned with recyclability goals as collection systems improve.”
