UPM, Kurz and Eurostampa release a collaborative study exploring new material and embellishment innovations for premium tequila packaging.

UPM, Kurz and Eurostampa Drive Breakthrough Study in Premium Tequila Packaging Innovation

UPM, Kurz and Eurostampa Unveil New Insights into Premium Tequila Packaging Innovation

A collaborative study between UPM Specialty Papers, Kurz, and Eurostampa is providing fresh technical insights into how premium spirits brands can elevate sustainability, functionality, and visual impact through advanced label and packaging technologies.

The companies conducted a detailed exploration of material performance, embellishment compatibility, and production efficiency specifically for high-end tequila packaging. With premium spirits continuing to expand globally, brands are increasingly seeking packaging solutions that offer luxurious shelf presence without compromising environmental responsibility. This latest joint study responds directly to those needs.

A Holistic Look at Premium Packaging Materials

The research evaluated a wide range of specialty papers, foils, and finishing techniques to determine how they behave across real-world bottling, labeling, and distribution conditions. UPM supplied fibre-based label papers designed for high print performance and enhanced sustainability, while Kurz contributed advanced finishing technologies such as hot-stamping foils, cold-transfer embellishments, and decorative metallization systems. Eurostampa conducted full production testing, ensuring that results reflected commercial-scale conditions for premium tequilas.

One of the key objectives was to understand how premium decorative elements interact with responsibly sourced papers — a combination that is often seen as challenging due to moisture sensitivity, embossing pressure, and foil adhesion requirements. The findings demonstrate that modern label papers paired with next-generation transfer technologies can deliver both sustainability and a luxury finish traditionally achievable only through more resource-intensive materials.

Fine-Tuning the Balance Between Luxury and Sustainability

The study reveals that premium embellishments no longer need to rely on plastic-heavy films or aluminium-based laminates. Instead, fibre-based substrates with reduced environmental impact can support complex graphical effects, including depth foiling, textured tactile finishes, holographic accents, and matte-metallic combinations. This evolution is crucial for the spirits industry, where visual distinction and perceived value remain essential market drivers.

Environmental performance was a central focus. UPM’s papers incorporate responsibly sourced fibres and are compatible with recycling systems, while Kurz has invested heavily in reducing the environmental footprint of its decorative layers and transfer systems. When combined with Eurostampa’s precision cutting and application processes, the result is packaging that supports brand positioning while aligning with global sustainability expectations.

Designed for Real Supply Chain Conditions

Beyond aesthetics, the study analysed the mechanical behaviour of label materials in conditions typical for tequila distribution — including humidity exposure, abrasion during transport, bottle condensation, and filling-line stress factors. The results indicated that certain fibre-based label papers performed exceptionally well when paired with the correct varnishes and hot-foil or cold-foil treatments. This gives tequila producers the confidence that premium labels will retain their visual integrity from bottling line to retail shelf.

The study also highlighted the ability of lightweight papers to maintain print crispness and embossing depth without material deformation, a key challenge for premium spirits packaging.

Implications for the Future of Spirits Packaging

As consumers increasingly seek products that unite premium craftsmanship with environmental responsibility, the tequila sector is under pressure to modernise its packaging choices. This collaborative research between UPM, Kurz and Eurostampa offers a roadmap for brands looking to adopt more sustainable label materials while continuing to deliver the rich visual storytelling that defines luxury spirits.

By providing technical data, performance validation and production insights, the study empowers tequila producers to rethink material selection and adopt solutions that offer both a high-end appearance and a reduced environmental footprint.

Ultimately, the findings reinforce a growing industry truth: innovation in premium packaging can — and must — support both artistic expression and sustainability.
