Discover the latest in sustainable food packaging innovation as UPM Specialty Papers and Fazer unveil a revolutionary paper-based solution for Oat Rice Pies. Learn how this collaborative effort combines expertise in food production and specialty papers to create a recyclable, plastic-free packaging alternative, championing sustainability in the industry.
UPM Specialty Papers and Fazer have unveiled a groundbreaking packaging innovation for Oat Rice Pies, introducing a new paper-based packaging solution that replaces traditional plastic laminates. This milestone achievement is the culmination of over two years of intensive research and development aimed at ensuring the recyclability of packaging materials without compromising food safety or product quality.
Combining Fazer's expertise in food production and processing with UPM Specialty Papers' proficiency in developing high-performance specialty papers, this collaborative project marks a significant leap forward in sustainable packaging solutions.
Piia Soininen-Tengvall, Director of Packaging Development at Fazer, underscores the collaborative nature of the project, stating, "This project has brought together Fazer's extensive knowledge in food production and processing, ensuring food safety, with UPM Specialty Papers' expertise in developing demanding specialty papers."
Traditionally, food packaging has relied on plastic materials or plastic lamination to provide protective properties and enable heat sealing. However, the new packaging solution developed by UPM Specialty Papers integrates barrier and heat-sealing properties directly into the paper substrate, eliminating the need for a separate plastic lamination layer.
The barrier properties of the UPM Confidio paper packaging are engineered to safeguard the enclosed product until the expiration date, preventing substances like fat from permeating the packaging. Furthermore, the packaging can be heat-sealed for added security.
Crafted from UPM Confidio barrier paper, the new packaging solution undergoes rigorous recyclability testing, with approximately 99% of the unprinted UPM Confidio paper being recyclable, resulting in a mere 1% rejection rate for recycling.
This innovative approach not only addresses the imperative to reduce plastic usage in packaging but also underscores the commitment of both UPM Specialty Papers and Fazer to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
