Reusable packaging innovator Vytal wins the Packaging Europe 2024 Readers’ Award, highlighting its scalable, app-driven system that’s transforming single-use food packaging across Europe.
Vytal, the innovative reusable packaging platform, has claimed the prestigious Readers’ Award at Packaging Europe 2024—recognition that reflects its growing impact on the packaging industry's transition toward circularity. Founded in Germany, Vytal is redefining how food packaging works in out-of-home consumption by replacing single-use containers with a smart, digital deposit-free reuse system.
Unlike traditional deposit models, Vytal’s system allows customers to borrow high-quality reusable containers without paying a deposit. By using the Vytal app, consumers can check out and return containers at participating restaurants, supermarkets, or delivery partners. If returned within 14 days, there are no costs—making reuse frictionless and scalable.
A scalable alternative to single-use packaging
As European regulations tighten on single-use plastics, Vytal’s model has emerged as a compelling solution. Its system currently operates in over 20 cities across Europe and continues to expand rapidly. Vytal offers reusable bowls, cups, and cutlery designed for durability, thermal performance, and ease of cleaning.
The company also integrates with food delivery platforms, including a partnership with Lieferando in Germany, enabling consumers to opt for reusable containers during checkout. This digital-first approach provides transparency and tracking, helping retailers monitor return rates and environmental impact in real time.
Reader recognition and industry validation
The Packaging Europe Readers’ Award recognizes innovation that not only addresses environmental concerns but also demonstrates strong user adoption and market potential. Vytal was chosen through public voting, reflecting both industry and consumer enthusiasm for practical reuse systems.
“Our mission has always been to make reuse the new normal,” said Sven Witthöft, Co-Founder of Vytal. “Winning this award is a huge encouragement and testament to the fact that people are ready for a change in how we package and consume food.”
Beyond packaging: building infrastructure for reuse
Vytal doesn’t just provide containers—it builds the digital and logistical infrastructure necessary to support large-scale reuse. This includes partnerships with logistics providers, cleaning hubs, and municipalities. By lowering operational barriers for businesses, Vytal helps restaurants and retailers comply with upcoming legislation while reducing packaging waste and costs.
Challenges and future direction
While interest in reuse systems is surging, scalability and consumer compliance remain key challenges. Vytal addresses these through user incentives, seamless digital integration, and robust tracking tools. The company is also investing in data analytics to help partners understand user behavior and optimize operations.
Looking ahead, Vytal plans to expand beyond Europe and introduce new container formats suitable for retail-ready meals and grocery applications. With mounting regulatory and environmental pressure, solutions like Vytal’s are not just innovative—they’re increasingly essential.
“The next step is interoperability—building reuse networks that transcend brand and national boundaries,” Witthöft added. “We believe digital reuse systems can power a pan-European circular packaging economy.”
As the packaging sector seeks viable alternatives to disposables, Vytal’s award-winning approach exemplifies how smart design, technology, and behavior change can converge to reshape the future of packaging.
