Amcor introduces lightweight flip-top closure for sauce packaging

Amcor has launched a new generation of flip-top closure designed for sauce packaging applications, including ketchup, mayonnaise and sweet sauces. The new 55 mm Flava Flip Top Closure 38/400 has been developed to reduce material use while maintaining performance and consumer convenience. The new closure represents a lightweighted evolution of Amcor’s existing solutions, achieving a weight reduction of 1.9 grams and bringing the total closure weight down to 8.5 grams. According to the company, this represents an 18.7% reduction compared with the previous generation of 55 mm flip-top closures.

Design focused on lightweighting and recyclability

The Flava Flip Top Closure has been designed as a monomaterial solution to support packaging circularity and help brands reduce their environmental impact. The closure is available with different orifice sizes and circular valve options, allowing it to be adapted to different sauce applications and product viscosities. It is also designed to be recyclable-ready when combined with PET, HDPE and PP bottles, where suitable recycling infrastructure is available.

Balancing sustainability and consumer experience

Amcor highlights that reducing packaging weight remains a key strategy for lowering carbon emissions across the packaging value chain. However, the company also focused on maintaining product performance, ensuring clean dispensing, ease of use and reliable closure functionality. The new solution aims to provide brands with a packaging component that combines reduced material consumption with practical benefits for consumers.

Lightweight packaging trends continue to grow

The launch reflects a wider industry trend towards lightweighting, mono-material designs and improved recyclability across food and beverage packaging. As brands face increasing pressure to meet sustainability targets and comply with evolving packaging regulations, innovations in components such as closures are becoming an important part of packaging optimisation strategies. Amcor’s latest closure development demonstrates how small packaging components can contribute to broader efforts to reduce material use and support a more circular packaging economy.
