The Spanish Federation of Wooden Packaging and its Components is getting ahead of the European regulation that will make the Product Digital Passport mandatory.
The Fruit Attraction trade fair is the chosen setting for the federation to promote its innovative sector-wide traceability project using QR codes.
Madrid, September 2025 – With the imminent entry into force of the European regulation on traceability and digital passports, the food industry must strengthen its commitment to packaging safety, transparency, and sustainability. In this scenario, wooden packaging offers a natural, safe solution that can adapt to the new regulatory standards.
Digital Passport: The Packaging’s Identity
The Spanish Federation of Wooden Packaging and its Components (FEDEMCO) has taken another step forward in innovation with its digital passport for wooden packaging. Accessible via a unique QR code on each box, this tool will allow immediate access to key information on traceability, sustainability, recyclability, food safety, and certifications such as ECOWOOX®, GROW®, and others like FSC or PEFC.
This initiative not only facilitates regulatory compliance but also brings tangible benefits to the entire industry and the end consumer. “The digital passport strengthens trust in the supply chain by giving consumers direct access to the most relevant information,” explains Emilio J. Pérez, FEDEMCO’s general director. “A QR code on a wooden package provides consumers with transparency about origin, sustainability, and recyclability, allowing them to make more informed and responsible purchasing decisions,” he adds.
Pilot Phase with Industry Support
After a first semester focused on assembling a multidisciplinary team together with the technology partners who developed the digital platform, the project is now in its pilot phase. Approved unanimously at FEDEMCO’s general assembly, the digital passport is already being designed with input from several companies in the sector. “Companies see the regulation as a challenge but also as an opportunity for differentiation,” says Pérez. “More than 80% of fruit and vegetable packaging in Spain and Portugal is already ECOWOOX® certified, and now they will be able to highlight this to the end consumer.”
In order to make the transition to this new digital stage smoother and more efficient at every step, FEDEMCO will offer technical support, training materials, and a practical guide available to the entire value chain.
The project has been selected as eligible for funding under the 2024-2028 Reindustrialization Strategy of the Valencian Community and will benefit from grants for Sectoral Associations within the INENTI program of the Department of Innovation, Industry, Commerce, and Tourism.
