Husky launches HyCAP 4.0 tooling for lightweight and tethered beverage closures, targeting longer mold life and higher production efficiency.
Husky upgrades tooling for high-volume beverage closure production
Husky Technologies has launched HyCAP 4.0, a new generation of injection moulding tooling developed for beverage closure manufacturers seeking lighter designs, greater production flexibility and longer mould life.
The platform is designed for high-volume applications including conventional and tethered closures, combining precision tooling with structural improvements intended to reduce wear and unplanned downtime.
Importantly for existing customers, HyCAP 4.0 tooling is fully compatible with Husky’s current HyCAP 4 moulding machines and auxiliary equipment, allowing manufacturers to upgrade tooling without replacing the complete production platform.
Platform targets ultra-lightweight closure designs
Lightweighting remains a major priority in beverage closures as brands seek to reduce plastic consumption without compromising sealing performance or mechanical reliability.
HyCAP 4.0 uses optimised tooling geometry and tighter process control to support increasingly lightweight and complex closure designs while maintaining repeatability at high production speeds.
The system is also designed to accommodate tethered closures, which have become increasingly important as regulations require caps to remain attached to certain beverage containers during use.
New stack design reduces metal-to-metal contact
A key technical development is Husky’s new stack architecture, which introduces polymer bushings between critical components.
Reducing direct steel-to-steel contact is intended to minimise mechanical wear and extend the operating life of the tooling while maintaining dimensional accuracy over long production runs.
Husky says the patented stack design targets a service life exceeding 50 million cycles, while precision-guided components also reduce the risk of flash around the plug-seal split line.
Maintenance intervals designed to become longer
The new tooling has been engineered to simplify maintenance and reduce the frequency of production interruptions.
Replaceable snap-in bushings allow worn components to be exchanged more quickly, while the reduced level of friction between mould components can lower spare-parts consumption and extend preventive maintenance intervals.
For manufacturers producing billions of closures annually, even small improvements in maintenance frequency and uptime can translate into significant operating cost reductions.
Flexibility supports changing closure regulations
Closure producers increasingly need to serve markets with different regulatory requirements at the same time.
HyCAP 4.0 supports both tethered and non-tethered designs, allowing manufacturers to adapt production according to market and customer requirements without committing to completely separate tooling platforms.
This flexibility is particularly relevant as tethered-cap requirements expand across jurisdictions while conventional closures remain widely used in other markets.
Tooling design targets higher overall equipment effectiveness
Husky says HyCAP 4.0 has been developed around production metrics including cycle time, uptime, maintenance efficiency and overall equipment effectiveness.
Improved tooling stability is intended to maintain consistent part quality across long production runs while reducing mechanical failures and servicing requirements.
The combination of lightweighting capability, durability and backward compatibility reflects a broader shift in closure manufacturing towards systems that can respond to both sustainability regulation and increasing pressure for lower part costs.
Beverage closure production continues to evolve
The launch demonstrates how regulatory changes and material reduction targets are influencing not only closure design but also the moulding equipment used to manufacture them.
As caps become lighter and geometrically more complex, mould precision, durability and process stability become increasingly important for maintaining output at industrial scale.
With HyCAP 4.0, Husky is positioning tooling performance as a key enabler for the next generation of lightweight and tethered beverage closures.
