Hybrid Software Launches SmartDFE Version 6 With GPU-Native RIP

Hybrid Software introduces SmartDFE Version 6

Hybrid Software HELIX has launched SmartDFE Version 6, a major update to its digital front end platform for high-speed industrial inkjet presses, introducing GPU-native processing alongside improvements to colour management, automation and operator workflows.

The platform is designed for press manufacturers building digital printing systems for labels, packaging and other industrial applications, providing technology spanning job creation, RIP processing, screening and printhead drive electronics.

GPU-native RIP delivers major performance gains

The most significant development is a GPU-native version of Harlequin Direct, SmartDFE’s high-performance raster image processing technology. Press manufacturers can now choose between CPU-native and GPU-native processing according to the performance and cost requirements of individual machines.

Rather than transferring selected tasks to the graphics processor, the new architecture runs the complete rendering pipeline directly on the GPU. Hybrid Software says testing with real-world variable-data PDF files produced rendering speeds up to 30 times faster than the CPU-native RIP.

Variable data drives demand for faster rendering

Variable-data printing can create substantial processing requirements because every printed item may contain different text, graphics, barcodes or personalised information.

As digital presses become faster, the digital front end must process increasingly complex files without becoming a production bottleneck. Higher RIP performance is therefore becoming particularly important in labels, packaging and other applications using serialisation, personalisation and versioning.

Job Editor gains GPU acceleration

Version 6 also introduces a redesigned Job Editor using GPU-native rendering for previews and thumbnails. The upgrade is intended to make the interface more responsive when operators are working with complex PDF files.

Faster previews can reduce waiting time during job preparation and allow operators to identify layout or content issues before files reach production.

Colour management capabilities expand

The release includes enhanced spot-colour management and expanded colour libraries, supporting packaging and label applications where accurate reproduction of brand colours remains a critical production requirement.

Hybrid Software has also improved integration with its PrintFlat technology, which is designed to compensate for printhead-to-printhead variation and improve uniformity across industrial inkjet systems.

16-bit workflows support higher print quality

SmartDFE Version 6 expands support for 16-bit processing workflows, enabling greater tonal precision and smoother gradients in applications requiring higher image quality.

The capability can be particularly relevant for premium packaging, photographic graphics and complex colour transitions where limited tonal resolution may produce visible artefacts.

OPC UA strengthens factory integration

The software also introduces significant improvements to OPC UA connectivity, allowing SmartDFE to exchange more production data with wider factory automation and manufacturing systems.

Greater interoperability supports increasingly connected packaging plants where printing equipment, workflow software, inspection systems and production management platforms need to exchange data automatically.

Digital front ends evolve with press speeds

Hybrid Software positions SmartDFE as a modular platform that allows OEMs to bring digital presses to market more quickly while retaining control over system architecture and differentiation.

As industrial inkjet systems continue to increase in speed and variable-data complexity, software performance is becoming as important as mechanical and printhead capabilities. SmartDFE Version 6 reflects this shift by using GPU processing to move more of the digital workflow closer to real-time press performance.
