Mayr-Melnhof Closes Packaging Plant in Turkey and Expands Operations in Romania

November 7, 2025 — European packaging group Mayr-Melnhof (MM) has announced a strategic restructuring of its production network, including the closure of its packaging facility in Tire, Turkey, and a significant expansion of its Romanian site in Ploiești. The decision is part of MM’s ongoing optimisation program aimed at improving efficiency, cost structure, and capacity utilisation across its European operations.

Streamlining operations for competitiveness
According to the company, the move responds to changing market conditions and evolving customer needs in the folding carton segment. The Turkish plant’s operations will be gradually wound down, with production volumes to be consolidated into other MM Packaging facilities in Central and Eastern Europe.

“This decision allows us to strengthen our competitiveness and align our footprint more closely with customer demand,” said an MM spokesperson. “While the closure in Turkey is regrettable, our expansion in Romania demonstrates our commitment to growing capacity in strategically important markets.”

Investment in Romania
MM will invest several million euros to expand its Ploiești packaging site, which serves leading FMCG, food, and personal care brands. The expansion includes new high-speed printing and converting lines, improved automation, and sustainability-driven upgrades to reduce energy use and waste.

The company stated that Romania’s location and skilled workforce make it a key hub for serving customers in both Western and Eastern Europe, as well as in the Balkans and Middle East regions.

Market outlook and ongoing transformation
The restructuring is part of Mayr-Melnhof’s broader transformation strategy, which includes modernising its production assets and focusing on growth segments such as premium cartonboard, sustainable packaging solutions, and high-performance recycled fibres. Despite challenges in demand across Europe’s packaging industry, MM continues to prioritise investments that enhance operational resilience and long-term profitability.

The company reaffirmed that all affected employees in Turkey will be offered fair severance packages and support during the transition.

With a network of more than 60 packaging and board production sites worldwide, MM remains one of Europe’s largest manufacturers of cartonboard and folding cartons, serving major global consumer goods companies.
