Minerals Technologies Inc. expands its paper and packaging satellite network in Asia with new plants in China and India, doubled capacity at an Indian site, and a strong strategic focus on packaging applications.
Minerals Technologies Inc. (MTI), a global, technology-driven specialty minerals company, has announced a major expansion of its paper and packaging satellite operations across Asia, underlining the region’s growing importance within the company’s long-term growth strategy.
The expansion program includes the successful startup of three new satellite plants during 2025 — two located in China and one in India — as well as the doubling of capacity at an existing Indian satellite facility. In addition, MTI expects to commission another new satellite plant in China in early 2026. Together, these investments significantly strengthen MTI’s footprint in Asia and enhance its ability to support customers producing paper and board for both graphic and packaging applications.
MTI’s paper and packaging satellite plants are integrated, on-site facilities installed directly at customer paper mills. These satellites allow MTI to seamlessly incorporate its minerals-based filling and coating pigments into customers’ production processes, improving efficiency, reducing costs, and enhancing end-product quality. The company pioneered this satellite concept in 1986 and today operates or is constructing 56 satellite plants worldwide.
Asia represents a particularly strong growth opportunity for MTI. The company currently operates satellite facilities in China, India, Indonesia, Japan, and Thailand. Since 2022, MTI’s volumes in Asia have increased by approximately 30%, with sales related to packaging applications more than doubling over the same period. Notably, around 50% of MTI’s Asia expansion investments in 2025 and 2026 are dedicated specifically to packaging applications, reflecting robust regional demand for board, carton, and flexible packaging materials.
Douglas T. Dietrich, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Minerals Technologies Inc., highlighted that Asia remains a significantly underpenetrated addressable market for advanced paper and packaging filler and coating technologies. He emphasized MTI’s commitment to partnering closely with customers as they add new paper and packaging capacity, while deploying innovative, efficient, and increasingly renewable mineral-based solutions.
Through its crystal engineering technology and deep expertise in calcium carbonate minerals, MTI enables paper producers to replace higher-cost wood fiber with functional mineral fillers, delivering brighter, more opaque uncoated paper products. In coating applications, MTI’s engineered pigments provide enhanced coverage, improved surface properties, and premium gloss, supporting both performance and sustainability goals across packaging and paper markets.
The Asia expansions further reinforce MTI’s position as a regional leader in paper and packaging solutions, positioning the company for continued growth as demand rises for cost-efficient, high-quality, and more sustainable packaging materials across emerging and established Asian markets.
