Discover Mondi and Skånemejerier's eco-friendly mono-material packaging for ICA’s Hushållsost cheese. Robust, recyclable, and aligned with Site Zero's mission for a circular plastic economy.
Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, has teamed up with Skånemejerier to craft a mono-material packaging solution based on polypropylene (PP), specially designed for various products, including ICA’s Hushållsost cheese. The newly developed packaging features a mono-material base web and lidding film, both manufactured and printed by Mondi. Skånemejerier then transforms these materials into 1kg and 2kg cheese blocks.
This environmentally conscious packaging, now available at the prominent Swedish supermarket ICA, is designed for easy recycling. Mondi’s mono-material solution provides robust barriers against oxygen and water vapors, ensuring the product stays fresh on the supermarket shelf. It offers high puncture resistance for optimal cheese protection and excellent printability, allowing effective communication of brand and recycling messages on the packaging.
This groundbreaking packaging launch aligns with the opening of Site Zero, the world's largest sorting facility for used plastic packaging in Sweden. Scheduled to go live in November 2023, this state-of-the-art facility will process used plastic waste from both Sweden and Finland. Thanks to the packaging’s mono-material design, the facility can efficiently sort and recycle this solution, contributing to a circular economy. Ingemar Jönsson, Packaging Manager at Skånemejerier, highlights the thorough collaboration with Mondi, starting with tests and trials in 2019. The successful adaptation of materials and machinery resulted in a fully recyclable packaging solution, meeting market demand for sustainability by keeping materials in the loop. Rickard Jansson, Development Engineer at Swedish Plastic Recycling, expresses positivity about the new packaging, emphasizing the use of mono-material film over laminates with different plastic types.
This innovation allows for efficient sorting and recycling, avoiding incineration. With Site Zero's new technology, the PP film-based packaging can be transformed into new products, creating circular plastic flows that reduce the reliance on fossil raw materials and combustion.
