Packaging producers announce new containerboard price increases

Several major packaging producers have announced new price increases for containerboard and boxboard products, as the paper packaging market faces tighter supply conditions, higher input costs and ongoing efforts to rebalance production capacity. International Paper, Smurfit Westrock and Cascades are among the companies implementing new price adjustments, following similar moves from other industry players. The announcements reflect growing pressure across the paper packaging value chain.

Rising costs and tighter supply drive market changes

According to industry analysts, the latest price increases are being influenced by several factors, including higher costs for recycled fibre, freight and energy, as well as reduced production capacity following recent mill and facility closures. International Paper announced an increase of around $80 per ton for containerboard, while Smurfit Westrock announced increases of approximately $100 per ton for containerboard products. Cascades also announced additional adjustments for linerboard and medium grades.

Boxboard producers also adjust pricing strategies

The price pressure is not limited to containerboard. Several producers have also announced increases for boxboard grades, including solid bleached sulfate (SBS) and folding boxboard (FBB), affecting applications such as folding cartons, foodservice packaging and consumer packaging. The market changes come as producers continue to optimise capacity and respond to evolving supply and demand conditions across the packaging sector.

Impact on the packaging industry

The latest price increases could affect converters, brands and retailers by increasing the cost of paper-based packaging solutions. With corrugated packaging remaining a critical format for logistics, e-commerce and consumer goods, changes in containerboard pricing are expected to have wider implications throughout the packaging supply chain. As companies continue adapting production strategies and capacity levels, market conditions will remain a key factor influencing packaging costs in the coming months.
