Xitron launches K2D-X and K2 3.0 to standardise prepress workflows across multiple digital presses and improve production automation.
Xitron expands K2 workflow family
Xitron has expanded its K2 workflow portfolio with two new products designed to simplify prepress and production management across increasingly complex digital printing environments.
The company, part of Hybrid Software Group, has introduced K2D-X, a vendor-independent workflow platform specifically aimed at operations running multiple digital presses, alongside K2 3.0, the latest generation of its established production workflow system.
K2D-X targets multi-vendor digital press environments
Digital print providers frequently operate presses from several manufacturers, with each machine relying on its own digital front end. This can create isolated production workflows and force operators to prepare similar files differently depending on which press will ultimately produce the job.
K2D-X is designed to create a standardised prepress layer above these individual DFEs. Incoming PDF files can be preflighted, corrected, normalised and imposed before being routed to the appropriate production system.
Native press DFEs remain in place
A central element of the platform is that converters do not need to replace the proprietary digital front ends already connected to their presses.
Instead, K2D-X prepares a production-ready PDF upstream and then passes that file to the manufacturer's native DFE, which continues to handle press-specific rendering and output. This allows businesses to retain previous equipment investments while reducing workflow fragmentation.
Common prepress can reduce production islands
As converters add digital presses over time, every new system can introduce another workflow, interface and set of file-preparation requirements. This can increase training requirements and make it more difficult to standardise production procedures.
Using a common upstream workflow can help operators prepare jobs consistently regardless of their final destination, potentially reducing duplicated work and simplifying job movement between presses when capacity or scheduling requirements change.
K2 3.0 extends workflow automation
Alongside K2D-X, Xitron has released K2 3.0, the newest version of its flagship production workflow platform.
The update introduces expanded workflow automation, enhanced job management, streamlined deployment and stronger third-party integration, supporting print businesses seeking to connect prepress more closely with wider production systems.
Packaging converters manage growing SKU complexity
The developments are particularly relevant as label and packaging converters handle more SKUs, shorter runs, versioned artwork and variable production requirements.
Digital printing provides flexibility for this type of work, but the benefits can be reduced if file preparation and job routing remain fragmented across multiple systems. More standardised workflows can help ensure that press capacity is used efficiently.
Workflow interoperability gains importance
Packaging production is becoming increasingly connected, with artwork management, MIS, prepress, digital front ends, presses and finishing equipment expected to exchange information more efficiently.
Vendor-independent platforms can provide a way to connect heterogeneous production environments without forcing converters to standardise their complete machinery fleet around a single supplier.
Software becomes central to digital print productivity
As press speeds increase, productivity is increasingly determined not only by printing hardware but also by how quickly jobs can be checked, prepared and transferred into production.
Xitron's expanded K2 portfolio reflects this shift towards software-led optimisation. By standardising upstream prepress while retaining press-specific DFEs, the company is targeting one of the operational challenges created by increasingly diverse digital printing fleets.
