Biona has received the BRCGS Packaging Materials certification, a global benchmark for safety and quality, for its 100% compostable packaging solutions used in the food sector.
Biona, the high-performance compostable packaging unit of Melhoramentos, has received the prestigious BRCGS Packaging Materials certification, recognized as one of the world's most rigorous standards in safety, quality, and compliance for packaging materials in direct contact with food. The certification validates Biona’s commitment to producing safe, traceable packaging that meets the highest international food safety standards.
Initiated in October 2024 during the plant’s structural phase, the certification process aimed to ensure that Biona’s operations met advanced product safety requirements, alongside key sustainability and corporate governance criteria. The achievement of this certification places Biona as a reliable supplier capable of providing packaging solutions for major food industries both in Brazil and internationally.
The BRCGS Packaging Materials certification, aligned with the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) requirements, underscores Biona’s ability to manufacture packaging solutions that are not only safe but also environmentally responsible. The fully recyclable packaging made from 100% recycled PET (rPET) ensures a significant reduction in material usage, contributing to a decrease in the need for new resources and minimizing environmental impact.
“Receiving the BRCGS Packaging Materials certification is a huge achievement for us. This certification acknowledges the strength of our processes and affirms that Biona’s entire production chain— from wood extraction to packaging and its biodegradation—operates with safety and compliance with the most demanding food industry practices,” said Carolina Alcoforado, Executive Director of Management and New Business at Melhoramentos.
Biona’s packaging, produced with renewable forest-based cellulose fibers and an exclusive barrier, is resistant to water, oil, and high temperatures, making it suitable for use in everything from freezers to ovens, microwaves, and air fryers. The company’s packaging also boasts the lowest carbon footprint among evaluated alternatives, with 68% fewer emissions than polyethylene packaging and 43.5% less than polypropylene packaging, according to a study conducted by Planton, a B-certified company specializing in emissions measurement.
This recognition highlights Biona’s leadership in sustainable packaging within the food industry and reflects the company’s dedication to providing innovative, eco-friendly solutions that meet both consumer and environmental expectations. With this certification, Biona is set to continue pushing forward as a key player in the sustainable packaging sector, setting new benchmarks for the industry.
