Melhoramentos, through its Biona sustainable packaging, joins the 'Show Your Footprint' movement, highlighting its carbon footprint of 0.02 kgCO₂e per unit as an example of innovation and sustainability in the packaging sector.
Melhoramentos, a publicly traded company operating in the editorial, renewable forest-based, and real estate sectors, has announced its participation in the 'Show Your Footprint' movement through its Biona packaging, which boasts a carbon footprint of 0.02 kgCO₂e per unit. The manufacturing unit, located in Camanducaia, Minas Gerais, represents a milestone in sustainability, standing out with one of the lowest greenhouse gas emission indices on the market.
Biona not only offers one of the smallest carbon footprints in the industry, but it also decomposes in just 75 days, showcasing its compostability. The company’s commitment to sustainability is further demonstrated by the transparent sharing of carbon footprint data, promoting a culture of more conscious and responsible consumption. With a capacity of 350 ml, Biona’s emissions are 68% lower than those of molded polyethylene (plastic), 59% lower than molded pulp packaging from China, and 51.5% lower than polyethylene terephthalate (PET) packaging.
In addition to sustainability, Biona is resistant to water, oil, moisture, and extreme temperatures, making it suitable for freezer, oven use (up to 220°C), and air fryers. Replacing one million units of plastic bowls with Biona could lead to a reduction of 17.4 tons of CO₂, which is equivalent to 12.9 million 10-km car trips or the annual energy consumption of 145 homes.
The analysis of Biona’s carbon footprint was conducted in the 'Carbon Footprint: Molded Pulp Packaging and Similar Products' study by Planton, a company specializing in greenhouse gas emission measurement. The study followed ISO 14067, ISO 14040, and ISO 14044 guidelines, along with the GHG Protocol, using a 'cradle-to-grave' approach to assess the full lifecycle impact of the packaging.
Global Impact: The adoption of Biona packaging not only demonstrates Melhoramentos’ dedication to environmental responsibility but also reflects the growing consumer demand for sustainable products across multiple industries. By offering an eco-friendly alternative, Biona helps companies reduce their carbon footprints, while providing a scalable and efficient packaging solution that aligns with global sustainability goals. As more businesses adopt Biona, it’s expected that the overall impact on carbon emissions will continue to be significant, contributing to a greener and more sustainable future.
Future of Biona Packaging: Looking ahead, Melhoramentos plans to expand the use of Biona packaging across various industries, particularly in foodservice, cosmetics, and personal care products. With the growing trend towards sustainable packaging, Biona is set to become a key player in the market, offering businesses the opportunity to meet both consumer demand for eco-friendly products and their own environmental objectives. The company is also working on new innovations to further reduce the environmental impact of its packaging solutions.
Community and Corporate Responsibility: Melhoramentos’ participation in the 'Show Your Footprint' movement reinforces its commitment to transparency and corporate responsibility. By engaging in this initiative, the company is not only sharing its carbon footprint data but also encouraging other businesses and consumers to join the sustainability movement. This effort underscores the importance of collective action in tackling climate change and creating a more sustainable and circular economy.
