Carrefour is scaling its collaboration with Loop to provide reusable packaging across more stores and online channels, reducing single-use plastics and promoting circular retail systems.

Carrefour Expands Loop Partnership to Scale Reusable Packaging in Retail

Carrefour, one of Europe’s largest retail chains, is deepening its commitment to circular economy practices by expanding its partnership with Loop, the reusable packaging platform developed by TerraCycle. As reported by Trellis, this initiative marks a significant step in the fight against single-use plastics in the retail sector, offering shoppers the ability to purchase everyday products in durable, returnable containers.

The Carrefour x Loop program allows customers to buy items—such as detergent, pasta, snacks, and personal care products—in specially designed reusable packaging. After use, customers return the empty containers to the store or via delivery partners, where they are cleaned, sterilized, and refilled for reuse. This system aims to eliminate waste at the source by replacing disposable packaging with a circular, refillable model.

Carrefour first piloted the project in France and has since expanded to multiple locations and online channels, responding to growing consumer demand for sustainable options. Loop’s system is fully integrated into Carrefour’s logistics and point-of-sale systems, making the user experience seamless for both in-store and online shoppers.

“We’re rethinking packaging from the ground up,” said a Carrefour representative. “The partnership with Loop allows us to offer our customers an experience that’s convenient, responsible, and fully aligned with our sustainability goals.”

The packaging used in Loop’s system is developed with durability and reuse in mind. Materials include stainless steel, glass, and rigid plastics designed for up to 100 reuse cycles. Each container is embedded with a unique tracking code to manage inventory and trace usage patterns, enhancing both efficiency and accountability.

According to Trellis, Carrefour reports strong engagement from eco-conscious consumers, especially in urban areas where recycling infrastructure may be limited or inconsistent. The reusable packaging system is helping the brand reduce packaging waste, lower carbon emissions, and reinforce its leadership in sustainable retail innovation.

This initiative also highlights a broader trend across Europe and beyond: large retailers are under increasing pressure to eliminate unnecessary packaging and transition to systems that prioritize reuse over recycling. Carrefour’s scalable integration of Loop sets a precedent for how major retailers can drive environmental change at a systemic level.

As regulations tighten and consumers seek alternatives to single-use plastics, Carrefour and Loop’s collaboration signals a pragmatic and forward-thinking shift toward closed-loop retail models. If widely adopted, this approach could redefine packaging norms and reduce the environmental footprint of everyday shopping.
