Cosmo Films has introduced a transparent biodegradable BOPP film with antifog, heat-seal and printing capabilities designed for fresh food packaging applications including salads, vegetables and meat
Cosmo Films has introduced a transparent biodegradable BOPP film designed for fresh food packaging applications, combining optical performance, sealing functionality and sustainability features. The new co-extruded biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film has heat-sealable and treated layers on both sides, targeting packaging formats where product visibility, sealing reliability and moisture control are essential.
The film incorporates oxo-biodegradable characteristics and is designed to break down within approximately two to two-and-a-half years when exposed to suitable environmental conditions. Cosmo Films positions the material as a solution for fresh food applications that require high performance while addressing increasing interest in packaging alternatives with improved end-of-life characteristics.
One of the key features of the film is its antifog capability. A dedicated layer provides fog resistance in both chilled and warmer conditions, helping maintain visibility of packaged products by reducing condensation and moisture-related misting. This is particularly important for fresh produce, where clear presentation can influence consumer purchasing decisions.
The opposite side of the film is optimised for printing, offering ink adhesion properties to support high-quality graphics and branding. By combining printability, sealing performance and visual clarity in one structure, the material aims to simplify packaging development for converters and food producers.
- Antifog performance improves product visibility in refrigerated and warm conditions.
- Heat-seal capability supports reliable packaging line performance.
- High optical clarity enhances product presentation on retail shelves.
- Print-ready surface enables effective brand communication.
- Biodegradable characteristics respond to growing interest in alternative packaging solutions.
The BOPP film also provides hot-tack strength, low seal initiation temperature and machinability features designed to support efficient processing on existing packaging equipment. These properties are important for fresh food applications where high-speed operations and consistent sealing are required.
The material is intended for packaging uses including fresh-cut vegetables, salads and meat products. Its transparency and processing performance also make it suitable for applications such as flower wrapping, where appearance and handling efficiency are important.
Fresh food packaging requires a balance between protection, shelf appeal and operational efficiency, with films increasingly expected to deliver additional sustainability benefits.
According to Cosmo Films global business head Kulbhushan Malik, the development focuses on integrating multiple functional requirements into a single BOPP film. The company aims to provide solutions that address evolving packaging expectations across food and consumer markets.
The launch follows Cosmo Films’ introduction of a sealable, peelable transparent anti-fog BOPET lidding film earlier in the year. That product was developed for refrigerated and fresh food packaging, improving shelf visibility by reducing fogging during storage and display.
For the flexible packaging industry, developments such as these demonstrate the continued evolution of films beyond basic barrier and sealing functions. Packaging suppliers are increasingly combining performance enhancements with sustainability considerations to meet changing retailer expectations, consumer preferences and regulatory pressures.
