DS Smith helps Pladis reduce plastic waste in its iconic Jacob's Cream Crackers box by 78%, achieving a significant reduction in CO2 emissions while maintaining impactful branding and high-quality print.

DS Smith: Revolutionizing Packaging with Sustainable Solutions

Sustainable Packaging Solutions for a Greener Future

In today's world, plastic reduction is becoming a top priority for retailers and consumers alike. With the increasing awareness of the environmental impact of packaging, companies are looking for innovative solutions to minimize their plastic waste. One such example is the collaboration between DS Smith and pladis, a global snacking company, to reduce plastic in its packaging.

A New Era in Packaging Design

The iconic orange Jacob's Cream Crackers box has been a staple in many households for years. However, with the growing demand for sustainable packaging, pladis approached DS Smith to create a new design that would minimize plastic waste while maintaining the tamperproof seal and high-quality print. After rigorous testing, the finished product featured a remarkable 78% reduction in plastic per pack, saving over 373,248g of CO2 so far.

A Challenge Met

According to Paul Bridge, DS Smith, "Now more than ever, consumers are concerned about the amount of plastic in their packaging." To meet this challenge, DS Smith applied its unique Circular Design Metrics to develop a solution that would minimize plastic waste while maintaining the same high-quality print as the previous packaging. The new design is now on-shelf, and the company is taking the learnings from this project to see how it can apply them to future solutions.

A Collaborative Effort

As David Guy, Packaging Director at pladis UK&I, noted, "Redesigning our packaging was a big moment for us, especially as Jacob's is such an iconic brand which customers know and love." The company was delighted to work with DS Smith and found that they really hit the brief by finding a solution that worked with their current manufacturing set up without compromising on branding.

The Future of Packaging

The success of this project demonstrates the potential for companies to work together to reduce plastic waste and create sustainable packaging solutions. As consumers continue to demand more eco-friendly packaging options, companies will need to prioritize sustainability and innovation in their packaging design.
