DS Smith transforms Rouen paper mill's energy with cutting-edge biomass boiler, reducing CO2 by 99,000 tonnes. A €90M investment driving sustainable packaging solutions and advancing global carbon reduction goals by 46% by 2030, aligning with Science-Based Targets and the Race to Zero campaign.

DS Smith's Rouen Paper Mill Accelerates Sustainability Journey with €90 Million Investment Boost

DS Smith, a global leader in sustainable packaging solutions, has announced a significant investment aimed at revolutionizing the energy supply of its paper mill located in Normandy, near Rouen.
The cornerstone of this project involves the replacement of the existing coal-fired boiler with a cutting-edge biomass boiler, poised to slash the site's annual emissions by an impressive 99,000 tonnes of CO2. The state-of-the-art 56 MW Valmet boiler is expected to cater to at least 80% of the site's heat requirements and is slated to become fully operational by the first quarter of 2025. Fueled by 94,000 tonnes of biofuel, 30% sourced from plant by-products (specifically pulper waste) and 70% from waste wood, including furniture and demolition waste, the biomass boiler marks a significant step towards sustainable energy practices. Engie Solutions will take charge of operating the boiler, with future plans including the potential installation of a steam turbine capable of generating around 10 MW of electricity and supplying a maximum of 65 t/h of steam. This environmentally conscious project received approval from the Regional Biomass Scheme in 2022 and enjoys support from local authorities, including a €15 million subsidy from the French Agency for Ecological Transition (ADEME). Highlighting the broader context of DS Smith's commitment to carbon reduction, the project, valued at nearly €90 million, is part of a series of initiatives across Europe and North America. These initiatives contribute to DS Smith's ambitious goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 46% in absolute terms by 2030, compared to 2019 levels, ultimately striving for net-zero emissions by 2050. DS Smith is actively engaged in the Science-Based Targets initiative, aligning with a 1.5°C science-based target in accordance with the Paris Agreement goals. The company is also a proud member of the United Nations-led Race to Zero campaign. Acquired by DS Smith in 2019, the Rouen paper mill, established in 1928, holds the distinction of being the first mill in France to produce lightweight recycled fluting for corrugated board manufacturing. In addition to this, the site manufactures light, medium, and dual-purpose papers catering to consumer goods and e-commerce packaging, boasting an annual production capacity of 280,000 tonnes.
