Ecohelix AB has won the Green Product Award 2025 in the packaging category for its biopolymer made from wood industry side streams, advancing sustainable packaging solutions.
Ecohelix AB, a pioneering biotech company based in Sweden, has been awarded the prestigious Green Product Award 2025 in the packaging category for its revolutionary biopolymer technology. This accolade recognizes Ecohelix’s innovative use of wood-based materials to develop sustainable alternatives to conventional fossil-based polymers, marking a significant step forward in the transformation of packaging materials across multiple industries.
The winning product, derived from industrial side streams of the forest industry, showcases Ecohelix’s ability to create functional biopolymers from hemicellulose, a component traditionally underutilized in cellulose production. This approach not only valorizes waste streams but also significantly reduces the carbon footprint of packaging materials.
"We are honored to receive the Green Product Award, which validates our mission to accelerate the transition toward a bio-based and circular packaging economy," said
, CEO of Ecohelix. "This recognition highlights the importance of turning renewable resources into high-performance materials without compromising the environment."
The Green Product Award, now in its 11th year, celebrates sustainable design and innovation across multiple sectors. For the 2025 edition, the competition received entries from more than 60 countries, showcasing products that merge aesthetics, functionality, and environmental responsibility. Ecohelix stood out among competitors for its scalable technology that offers real-world applications for brand owners, converters, and manufacturers seeking green alternatives to petroleum-based polymers.
Ecohelix’s biopolymers are especially suited for:
- Barrier coatings in paper and cardboard packaging
- Binders in fibre-based composites
- Film-forming agents in flexible packaging applications
What makes their innovation particularly compelling is the closed-loop approach: using residues from pulp production not only creates economic value for the forest industry but also minimizes the reliance on virgin raw materials. This aligns perfectly with the European Union’s Green Deal and growing corporate commitments to net-zero emissions across the packaging supply chain.
Ecohelix is currently scaling up its pilot production in collaboration with industrial partners, including Nordic forest giants, and expects commercial applications to hit the market within the next two years. The company’s biopolymer solutions are designed to be drop-in replacements, allowing existing packaging production lines to adopt them with minimal changes.
As consumers and regulators continue to demand more sustainable packaging options, the success of Ecohelix serves as a beacon for bio-innovation. Their recognition by the Green Product Award 2025 affirms that scalable, renewable, and circular solutions are not just future goals — they are already here.
