Around 1,150 representatives from the corrugated board industry and its suppliers gathered at the FEFCO Technical Seminar in Lyon from October 25-27. The event focused on presenting the latest innovations and process optimization within the sector, with discussions revolving around ideas, policies, and emerging technologies.
The Lyon Centre de Congrès played host to sustainability advancements, optimized energy consumption, the production of lighter and stronger board systems, and other intelligent technologies. The theme for the year was "Shaping our future through innovations."
Bringing together dynamic stakeholders, including representatives from the corrugated sector, suppliers, customers, and industry visionaries, the conference explored how intelligence and digitalization can revolutionize manufacturing processes, improve supply chain management, and enhance overall efficiency. Key topics included energy efficiency, energy reduction, light paper grammages, artificial intelligence (AI), digital printing, logistics flows, bio-based coatings, cybersecurity, and EU legislation. The program featured four panel discussions with leaders and experts from the industry and the sector for increased interactivity.
The exhibition floor showcased 165 stands and 110 exhibitors from 41 countries, setting a record attendance for the 2023 event. These numbers marked an increase from previous FEFCO events in Copenhagen (2021) and Geneva (2019).
The FEFCO Technical Seminar commenced after a crucial European Parliament Environment Committee vote on the EU's proposed Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which aims to reduce packaging waste throughout the economy.
FEFCO President Fady Gemayel highlighted that the corrugated industry aligns with the EU's Green Deal objectives, emphasizing the recyclability and recycled nature of corrugated cardboard. He emphasized the circularity of corrugated boxes, with used boxes being recovered, repulped, and transformed into new boxes. Eleni Despotou, FEFCO's Director General, expressed confidence in the corrugated cardboard sector's readiness for the future, stating that they are developing smart and sustainable packaging solutions to address changing demands and contribute to a greener planet.
