Innovative Reusable Packaging Systems in Finland: A Major Step Towards Sustainability

The University of Vaasa and VTT have launched an ambitious research project in collaboration with 21 stakeholder organizations to develop reusable packaging systems in Finland. This initiative, named Reusify, aims to accelerate the adoption of reusable packaging and potentially access an export market valued at 1.45 billion euros by 2035.

The rising consumption of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and food take-away has led to an increased demand for single-use packaging, contributing significantly to global waste management challenges. Recognizing this issue, the Reusify project has set out to create innovative solutions that address these environmental concerns.

The thirty-month research project is primarily funded by Business Finland and has a total budget of approximately 2 million euros. Its primary goal is to develop reusable packaging systems that reduce the use of packaging materials, fossil-based packaging, and packaging waste. This initiative is seen as a major step toward a circular economy, emphasizing sustainability and efficiency.

Ali Harlin, VTT’s research professor, highlighted the importance of this transition: "The transition from single-use to reuse in packaging is a major shift toward a circular economy. It demands a systemic, multi-level perspective on business practices that is only possible with a robust partnership model that engages the entire value chain, from package producers to logistics, retail, maintaining packages and waste management."

The Reusify project also aims to create new competencies and export opportunities for Finnish industry players. It covers various aspects of the packaging lifecycle, including packaging raw materials and products, tracking systems, machinery, logistics, cleaning, filling, labeling, and software solutions. By developing these areas, the project seeks to position Finnish companies at the forefront of the global market for reusable packaging.

This initiative is expected to significantly impact the packaging industry by promoting sustainable practices and reducing environmental footprints. By fostering a comprehensive partnership model, Reusify aims to bring together package producers, logistics providers, retailers, and waste management companies to create a cohesive system that supports the reuse of packaging materials.
