Kaufland Germany Tests New Packaging Return System for Cosmetics
November 5, 2025 — German retailer Kaufland is testing a new packaging return system for cosmetics in a move to reduce packaging waste and improve the sustainability of the beauty sector. The initiative is part of Kaufland's broader strategy to enhance its commitment to circular economy practices, offering customers the opportunity to return packaging for reuse or recycling after use.
Enhancing Sustainability in the Cosmetics Sector
The new system, which will be trialed in select Kaufland stores across Germany, aims to tackle the growing issue of single-use packaging in the beauty industry. Customers will be able to return cosmetic product packaging, such as tubes, jars, and pumps, at designated collection points. These returned items will be cleaned, sterilized, and reused for future products, helping to minimize waste and reduce the need for new packaging materials.
“We are excited to introduce this packaging return system for cosmetics as part of our efforts to reduce packaging waste and support a more sustainable beauty industry,” said Hans Müller, Head of Sustainability at Kaufland Germany. “This initiative aligns with our commitment to providing eco-friendly solutions and reducing our environmental footprint.”
A Step Toward Circular Economy
As part of the pilot program, Kaufland is working closely with key cosmetics brands to integrate the return system into their packaging and product offerings. By creating a closed-loop system, the company aims to reduce the overall environmental impact of the beauty products sold in its stores.
“The beauty industry has long been challenged by the amount of packaging waste it generates,” said Müller. “By embracing a circular economy model, we believe we can make a significant difference and contribute to a more sustainable and responsible industry.”
Consumer Engagement and Future Plans
Customers who participate in the program will be rewarded with incentives, such as discounts on future purchases or loyalty points. Kaufland hopes that the introduction of this return system will not only drive sustainability but also engage consumers in the effort to reduce waste and promote responsible consumption.
“Our customers are increasingly looking for ways to contribute to sustainability, and we are excited to offer them an easy and effective way to do so,” said Müller. “If the pilot is successful, we plan to expand this program to other product categories and stores, making it a central part of our sustainability strategy.”
Looking to the Future
With the launch of this packaging return system, Kaufland is setting a new standard for sustainability in the cosmetics industry. The initiative will not only help reduce packaging waste but also encourage other retailers and brands to adopt similar circular economy practices. As the program expands, Kaufland hopes to inspire the wider industry to take bold steps toward reducing the environmental impact of packaging and moving toward a more sustainable future.
