Kolmar Korea introduces a recyclable paper pouch for sheet masks, cutting plastic use by 45% and reinforcing its global leadership in sustainable beauty packaging.
Kolmar Korea, a leading force in South Korea’s cosmetics ODM sector, has unveiled a significant innovation in sustainable packaging: a recyclable paper pouch for sheet masks. This advancement underscores the company’s strategic commitment to reducing plastic waste and leading global efforts in sustainable beauty packaging.
The newly developed pouch was created in collaboration with Murim, a Korean pulp and paper specialist. Utilizing Neoforet FLEX, an eco-friendly material known for its resilience in cold and humid conditions, the packaging achieves a notable 45% reduction in plastic use compared to conventional plastic or aluminium-based alternatives. This development directly addresses the ongoing criticism of sheet mask packaging for its environmental impact.
This initiative builds on Kolmar Korea’s well-established sustainability track record. In 2020, the company introduced the world’s first commercialised paper tube, which cut plastic consumption by over 80%. This was followed in 2023 by the launch of paper sticks for lip balm and sun sticks, which slashed plastic use by 86%. Made from mineral paper derived from discarded stones, these sticks received widespread acclaim for their role in waste reduction and circular material use.
“We are honoured to be recognised for our sustainable growth initiatives,” said a Kolmar Korea spokesperson. “We remain committed to advancing eco-friendly technologies and fulfilling our role as a global leader in K-beauty.”
Indeed, Kolmar Korea’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. In November 2024, TIME Magazine named the company one of the World’s Best Companies in Sustainable Growth 2025. Ranked 125th globally, Kolmar Korea was the only Korean cosmetics brand to earn this distinction, cementing its leadership in sustainable manufacturing practices.
The new paper pouch is expected to be just the beginning. Kolmar Korea plans to extend the use of Neoforet FLEX to other product categories, including refill cushion compacts and spout pouches, potentially transforming the packaging landscape across the K-beauty industry.
Recognition has also come from the design world: Kolmar’s paper tube and paper stick have been awarded by prestigious platforms such as IDEA, the iF Design Award, and the Red Dot Design Award. These accolades not only validate the company’s commitment to sustainability but also highlight its prowess in marrying functionality, aesthetics, and environmental responsibility.
As global demand grows for eco-conscious beauty solutions, Kolmar Korea’s proactive strategy positions it at the forefront of innovation. By pioneering biodegradable and recyclable alternatives in a traditionally plastic-heavy industry, the company is helping to redefine what sustainable packaging means in cosmetics manufacturing.
This paper pouch development is more than a packaging shift—it’s a symbol of the evolving values in consumer goods. And as regulations tighten and environmental awareness rises, brands like Kolmar Korea that invest early in scalable, sustainable technologies are likely to shape the industry's future.
