Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) solutions from Ser Pak Packaging play a vital role in preserving fresh produce during long transit times, helping reduce food loss and improve shelf life.

MAP Packaging by Ser Pak Helps Reduce Weight Loss and Extend Shelf Life in Fresh Produce Logistics

The role of packaging in the fresh produce supply chain has become increasingly critical as global trade relies on longer transit times. Yagmur Ozbutun, Export Area Executive at Ser Pak Packaging, emphasizes that poor packaging can significantly contribute to post-harvest losses, with up to 52% of fresh produce loss occurring between harvest and final consumption.

“Cold chain management is essential, but temperature control alone is not enough,” Ozbutun explains. “In many cases, the product is not to blame—it's the packaging that fails to manage moisture and respiration effectively.”

Ser Pak’s Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) solutions are designed to address these challenges. By stabilizing the internal package environment, MAP packaging can reduce water loss, slow down respiration, and significantly extend shelf life. This is particularly valuable for long-distance maritime shipments to regions such as North America, Europe, and Russia, where even minor quality deviations can result in rejections or financial claims.

However, Ozbutun warns against using a one-size-fits-all approach. “MAP must be tailored. Product type, box size, storage temperature, and transit duration must all be aligned. Standardization often leads to inconsistent results.”

Ser Pak customizes its packaging based on each customer's unique supply chain, conducting real-world shipping trials to verify performance before full-scale implementation. All production complies with the BRCGS Global Standard for food safety and quality, ensuring traceability and international compliance.

“We serve markets with high expectations—Europe, Russia, the Middle East, the US, and Mexico. Our clients require packaging that performs predictably over 25 to 65-day shipments. That’s why we focus on collaborative, tested solutions,” Ozbutun adds.

Ser Pak will showcase its innovations at Fruit Logistica in Berlin, February 2026, in Hall 27, Stand A-12. The company invites industry professionals to discuss packaging’s role in reducing food loss, maintaining freshness, and enhancing brand value throughout the supply chain.
