Metsä Board embarks on a sustainable journey by modernizing its Simpele board mill, enhancing folding boxboard quality and production efficiency. Learn how this investment supports the company's commitment to fossil-free production and sustainability goals.

Metsä Board Modernizes Simpele Board Mill for Sustainable Production

Metsä Board has announced a significant investment to modernize the folding boxboard machine at its Simpele facility. This decision aims to enhance the quality of folding boxboard while also boosting production efficiency.

The investment aligns with the company's commitment to sustainability, as it enables the replacement of fossil fuels in paperboard production. Metsä Board targets achieving fossil-free production across all its mills by 2030, and this investment supports that goal.

Previously, Metsä Board confirmed plans for a comprehensive investment program to modernize the entire Simpele board mill over the next decade. This program, slated for implementation in phases, includes upgrades in mechanical pulp production, enhancements in the finishing area, and the construction of a new power plant. However, investment decisions on these aspects are pending.

The investment in the board machine will result in a production capacity increase of approximately 10,000 tonnes, elevating the annual production capacity of Simpele folding boxboard to around 310,000 tonnes. Simpele mill specializes in producing high-quality lightweight folding boxboard, primarily for food and pharmaceutical packaging.

The implementation of this investment will commence immediately and is projected to conclude in the second half of 2025. The estimated investment value is approximately €60 million, spread over the period from 2024 to 2026.

Mika Joukio, CEO of Metsä Board, emphasized that the board machine's renewal is part of a broader initiative to modernize the Simpele board mill. This investment will not only enhance the quality of folding boxboard, meeting stringent requirements, especially in food and pharmaceutical packaging, but also improve cost competitiveness. Furthermore, it will pave the way for nearly fossil-free production at the Simpele facility.
