Mondelez and Saica Group launch sustainable paper-based packaging for confectionery and chocolate markets, designed to be recyclable and meeting CEPI standards.
Mondelez and Saica Group have joined forces to introduce a groundbreaking paper-based packaging solution for the confectionery, biscuits, and chocolate markets. This innovative packaging is designed to be fully recyclable within the paper waste stream and is suitable for heat sealable packing processes.
The new packaging can be manufactured with or without coating, depending on the desired final appearance. Extensive efforts were made during development to optimize the conversion and Vertical Form Fill Seal (VFFS) packing processes. The goal was to ensure high-quality printing, optimal functionality, and ease of use on machine-packing lines. The packaging has been rigorously tested to meet mechanical and sealing performance standards, ensuring products are delivered to consumers in perfect condition.
"Packaging sustainability is a serious challenge that requires our full commitment and collaboration with dedicated companies like Mondelez," says Miguel Angel Dora, General Manager at Saica Flex. "Our ambition to develop Saica’s flexible monomaterial structures, including paper, is crucial to achieving these goals. By 2025, we aim for 100% recyclability of our flexible packaging to contribute to a truly circular economy."
The new paper-based packaging meets the stringent sustainability standards established by the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI).
