Mondi and Ekornes have introduced CompressWrap, a recyclable paper-based solution that replaces plastic mattress packaging, aligning with circular economy goals and winning the German Packaging Award.
Mondi and Ekornes have joined forces to launch a breakthrough in sustainable furniture packaging: a fully paper-based solution designed specifically for high-end mattresses. This innovation replaces traditional plastic wrapping with CompressWrap, part of Mondi’s fibre-based re/cycle portfolio, setting new standards for eco-conscious packaging in the furniture industry.
Ekornes, known as the largest furniture producer in the Nordic region, has begun implementing CompressWrap across its operations, aiming to protect mattresses during transport while minimizing environmental impact. The new system is comprised of two key components:
- FunctionalBarrier Paper 95/5 – used in the initial compress wrapping process, this paper features a thin coating that enables vacuum sealing and high durability during compression.
- FunctionalBarrier Paper Reduce – applied as the secondary outer wrapper, this material offers excellent sealing properties to maintain product integrity during shipping.
By replacing plastic with a renewable, fibre-based alternative, Ekornes and Mondi are directly responding to increasing consumer demand for circular, sustainable packaging solutions. The new CompressWrap packaging is designed for recyclability in accordance with the 4evergreen 'Design for Circularity Guidelines', aligning with broader industry goals to reduce packaging waste and increase material reuse.
“At Ekornes, we are passionate about delivering the best sleep you can dream of, and this new partnership with Mondi means we can now wrap that promise in a solution that aligns with our commitment to sustainability,” said Pål Aage Nordahl, Managing Director at Ekornes Beds AS.
One of the most notable features of CompressWrap is its user-friendly design. Unlike traditional plastic wrapping, the paper-based material allows consumers to open the mattress packaging easily—without the need for sharp tools—enhancing the unboxing experience and reducing the risk of injury or product damage.
Importantly, the CompressWrap runs seamlessly on Ekornes’ existing packaging machinery, ensuring that the switch from plastic to paper is both cost-effective and operationally efficient. This compatibility minimizes production disruption and reduces the need for capital investment, making the transition attractive to other manufacturers as well.
“By understanding Ekornes’ needs, we were able to deliver a packaging solution that not only meets their technical requirements but also contributes towards a circular economy,” noted Ola Forsberg, Industry Group Manager Foaming Papers at Mondi.
Further underscoring its industry impact, CompressWrap will be showcased at the upcoming Fachpack trade show in Nuremberg. The innovation has already received the prestigious German Packaging Award 2025 in the Sustainability category—recognition that validates its role in shaping the future of environmentally responsible packaging.
As industries push toward sustainable transformation, the Mondi-Ekornes collaboration is a prime example of how design, functionality, and environmental responsibility can be successfully integrated into modern packaging systems.
