Mondi unveils a banana box made with 40% recycled fiber and 10% less weight, developed in collaboration with Incarpalm, Europcell, and a European importer.
Mondi has unveiled a lightweight and sustainable banana box, developed in collaboration with banana exporter Incarpalm, trading partner Europcell, and a European importer. This innovative packaging solution underscores the growing emphasis on eco-friendly, high-performance solutions across global supply chains—particularly in agriculture and fresh produce.
Lightweight Yet Strong
The new Mondi banana box is reported to be up to 10% lighter than traditional alternatives without compromising strength. This weight reduction not only improves shipping efficiency by reducing fuel usage and emissions but also makes handling easier across various transportation stages.
Despite its reduced weight, the box maintains high structural integrity, owing to the use of Mondi’s ProVantage SmartKraft Brown for durability and ProVantage Frescoflute for enhanced firmness. Together, these materials provide strong protection for bananas during international transport, where rough handling and fluctuating conditions are common.
Prioritising Sustainability
A key feature of the new banana box is its composition: approximately 40% of the material is recycled fibre. This aligns with growing industry efforts to reduce environmental impact and respond to consumer expectations for more sustainable packaging choices.
According to Marek Motylewski, Technical Service Expert at Mondi, the development stemmed from a simple client inquiry and evolved into a solution that now offers measurable benefits to the entire supply chain.
“Seeing the new box perform under such tough conditions was incredibly rewarding,”he remarked, emphasizing the project's collaborative spirit and practical impact.
Collaboration as a Catalyst for Innovation
This initiative reflects the power of cross-sector partnerships. By bringing together a packaging specialist (Mondi), an exporter (Incarpalm), a trading intermediary (Europcell), and a European importer, the project was able to combine expertise across different nodes of the supply chain. The result is a tailored, high-performance packaging solution that meets technical, logistical, and environmental criteria.
Industry Implications
The implications of this development stretch across multiple sectors:
- Packaging Industry: The focus on lightweight yet strong materials pushes the boundaries of sustainable design.
- Agricultural Exporting: Exporters benefit from packaging that reduces costs and complies with global environmental standards.
- Logistics and Supply Chain: Lighter packaging translates into lower fuel usage, more efficient stacking, and reduced breakage rates.
As global markets increasingly demand eco-conscious logistics solutions, the Mondi banana box sets a benchmark for how collaborative innovation can advance both environmental goals and supply chain performance.
This project demonstrates a key industry trend: packaging must do more than protect—it must also deliver measurable value in sustainability, efficiency, and adaptability.
